why has someone butchered the plasic side protection?

Hi all, any ideas why these have been butchered? fitting side steps was my thought? is this where the side steps mount?

Yes, Stan is correct, looks from this and your other post about the plug, that someone removed your deployable side steps, but why on a 2018 car, when you think they’d still be newish and still working OK? They do need a fair bit of maintenance to be fair, I’m forever lubing mine (MY2017). “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?
