Drivers Door Mirror v's Hired Campervan....

Long story short.....



A narrow, winding Scottish A-road (which is well known to me) has an even narrower bridge approaching a right hand bend. This 'bridge' can probably accommodate two small hatchbacks passing with relative ease. Once you get up to the scale of a pair of modern family cars, the phrase "breathe in" will be uttered by both drivers, whether or not there are passengers there to hear it.

An L322 and a family car coming round the bend in the opposite direction will result in both verbal utterances and rapid anal sphincter contractions, aka squeeky bum time. Laughing

However, an L322 meeting a wayward campervan, whose driver is going too fast (evident by the fact the camper was bouncing round the bend as it approached) was only ever going to result in one outcome..... BANG! Shocked

I consider myself quite lucky here. I uttered the words, tightened the sphincter AND missed the bridge with the nearside of my car. The drivers door mirror was not so lucky.....





The question is, what to do here in order to fix it?

The Powerfold still functions and the mirror motor operation appears to be ok. However, I'm unsure of what's 'fixable' and what's not. The place where the mirror glass fixes-on appears to be a bit chewed.

Have looked in the usual places for a second-hand unit (2012 Westminster) without any success. I've seen a complete (new) LR mirror being offered for in excess of £1000 Shocked

Looking at the photos, to get the parts you need, you will probably have to buy a complete unit.
I have had the same with my old 2006 car.
If you can't find one on fleabay etc, then try sites like 'partsgateway', or 'gentlemen of salvage'
There are a few sites where you enter the part(s) you need, this is circulated to breakers yards and they come back to you if they have the part and they quote a price.
Apologies if it sounds like teaching granny to suck eggs.
Several times over the last few years I have found 'hard to find parts' this way, some of these outfits have quite good knowledge and my parts have been in very good condition. Good luck with the hunt Thumbs Up £1000+ is a complete rip off Shocked Censored

As for an insurance claim, I have no idea, but it sounds like an iffy one to claim on, judging by your description of the accident, dash cam footage? Others on here will be better educated as to insurance claim possibilities.

It's a few years ago now but I had the same thing on a 3.6 - had to keep looking for a second hand one and had to pay through the nose for it as the only n ew bits available were as a complete unit.

Just like home insurance, I've never claimed on either and view them as last resorts for a total loss situation only.

With this one, it would inevitably have been knock-for-knock, despite me having the moral high ground. Utterly pointless to involve insurance, especially when I have an inflated voluntary excess due to my views on the purposes of insurance anyway! The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

You got very lucky there John with a smashed mirror, don't think the camper van driver is going to be too happy when he takes it back with a long scratch going down the side of it and loses his £1000 deposit, they are very strict on that type of thing.
I'm going to be in the Highlands for a week in the middle of June dodging stags and motorhomes. Hope you get it sorted.

Silly question maybe? What parts were salvageable out of the smashed parts? Could you glue/hot staple the case back together for at least temporary use until you find another mirror? a mirror glass can be bought fairly cheaply and glued in...

We have seen more and more 09-12 mirrors with the folding mech failing! So maybe keep an eye out for a worn out one and mount the bits back onto your stem?

What you see is what's left. I'd estimate an effective contact speed of 60mph. The mirror and the plastic parts were obliterated. Big Cry

That said, the powerfold function is working, the puddle lamp bulb is still lighting and the motor appears to move the mirror-mount in four different directions, so as you say, all is not lost. I guess I just need the plastic surround (in Orkney Grey above and black below) and a mirror to make it good. However, aside from the glass, it doesn't look like these parts are available separately. The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile
