Footwells wet

Morning all!
I’m starting work in my classic and have noticed that the front footwells are wet.

I have removed the carpet and soundproofing and they are soaked.

The two grommets were not in their holes, so I have put them back in.

Just checked the car this morning and the footwells are wet again.

Any ideas on what I need to check please?

It’s a 93 with air con, but no sunroof. The drivers window seems to have some condensation, but the passenger window doesn’t. The car is stored under cover so not out in the rain.

Thanks in advance!

As you said that you are starting work on your classic, I assume that you have not started the engine. If the car is under cover then the water could be a leak from the air heater, then the water will run down under the carpets, never worked on a 'classic' but I would check the coolant level, this could well be the cause.

Thanks!
I’ll check to coolant in the morning.

Would a coolant leak affect both front foot wells?

The water could collect in both foot wells, the insulation can also act as a wick and spread the water around. I only suggested the heater matrix as with the car under cover, the only water that should be in your car is the engine cooling water. This is on the presumption that the foot wells were dry before the car was parked under cover. As said, check the coolant level, if it's all gone, that's the source.

Coolant seems fine and I’ve just run the car for half an hour and the footwells are still dry.

I took the car out in the run the other day, so I’m guessing it’s water ingress from somewhere.

Similar problem; not the sunroof, not the windscreen, not the footwells - so I’m hoping the bulkhead isn’t too bad…

All I can think of now is start trying to replicate the water ingress with a hose pipe / pressure washer and see what happens. With my L322 I once had an inch of water in the spare wheel well after the car had been standing for months, I tried EVERYTHING, but could not identify the leak, and it has never happened again. Still mystified to this day.
