Yep, fair point.
I’m trying to arrange a smoke test so will see what that brings up

I had similar problems with mine and I ended up replacing the throttle body itself in the end and that sorted it. That said, I was lucky to get one - they were on indefinite back order and I finally found a brand new genuine one on German e bay.

Looks like I’m making progress.

The actuator for the offside turbo isn’t working. I’ve removed it and the teeth on the half moon cog have worn down to the point they aren’t making contact with the worm.

Is it as simple as buying a replacement actuator, fitting it and away I go, or does it need some sort of setting up?

If you can get an actuator, it will 'just work' in 95% of cases as the position is driven by the measured boost - the other 5% of cases needs a teach-in of the extents.
Are you absolutely sure the gimbals in the turbo are free moving? sometimes it's just a failed actuator, occasionally it's due to the vanes in the turbo sticking, there is an 'unstick' routine that the engine control module runs if it sees the actuator current rising and no or insufficient movement, you'd need a 'scope to determine this though and it can't be triggered, not even SDD (without engineering access) can force it.

Well done in finding it!

Thanks, it’s been frustrating to find but glad I’ve finally found the issue.

I checked the linkage and it seems to be moving up and down freely. It isn’t tight or notchy. I can see in the previous paperwork that the mechanism has been freed off. I suspect this is whats worn the actuator cogs pre my ownership and over the last 10k I’ve done in Betty, the actuator has slowly got worse as I have had intermittent faults which have gradually got more frequent.

I don’t know if it’s possible to get a repair kit for the actuator rather than a replacement actuator? I guess that would keep any pre set parameters if there is anything stored in the actuator itself.

I was worried the turbo had to come off to be setup on a bench

Just make sure you get the orientation of the actuator rod right, I've seen a remanufactured one that was assembled incorrectly and caused all kinds of problems, I've never seen a repair kit, the extents are stored in the engine control module, not the actuator, if you're replacing the mechanicals, the extents would likely be different anyway due to slight positional variations.

A quick search spits up this https://www.turborebuild.co.uk/electronic-actuator who may be able to help, never used them so of unknown providence.

ETA - take the opportunity to replace the actuator rod - make sure the replacement is exactly the same length between centres and pack the joints with high temperature non-metallic grease before assembly.

Well, after many phone calls and searching the net I found the right actuator.

Purchased from Midland Turbos in Bulwell who were particularly helpful and from my experience this time I would certainly recommend them.

They posted it to arrive 24 hours later, and within 30 minutes of arriving it was fitted, the car re-assembled and ready for testing.

A 50 mile run and no faults have come up and the engine is running very smooth so fingers crossed that’s the old girl fixed.

A bit fiddly but once you work it out an easy job.

Thanks everyone for your comments and support, really appreciated.

James

Hi James, have you got any part numbers for the actuator please?

There wasn’t a part number on mine, you need the part number of your turbo.

The turbo and actuator are one part from land rover (assume this is why the actuator doesn’t have its own part number)

If you look just above the actuator, there is a plate on the turbo housing with three lines of codes. It pretty hard to read, but clean up the plate and a good camera eventually did the trick.

Bottom left is the part number you need to match the actuator to your turbo. Mine was 800089.

Midland Turbo were able to match it from the details on that plate (mine was pretty worn and hard to read) and detailed pictures of the actuator I removed.

Here’s the website for them should you want to contact them, I can only vouch for my one interaction www.midlandturbo.com

Hope that helps
