I have ummed and ahhed since I bought the L405.....

It came with seven months of the top JLR warranty so do I renew it or let it lapse...?

They wanted £1,700 for another year...

So it went to a specialist last Monday for a look over before the warranty expired and it's in remarkable good condition underneath, no oil leaks from anything bar one rear shock, the other shock, both adaptive roll bar actuators, all brake lines, front callipers and oil cooler have all been recently replaced.

The drivers door lock stopped locking with it's button last week and the tailgate has had a mind of it's own since I bought it..

So they are paying for a new shock, a door handle and an upper tailgate thingamebob, the lower was done not long ago as well..

So I decided to let it lapse... I will reveal all in a year to see if it was the right decision....

At least no one else gets to work on it, which I really don't like...  Pete

It always seems odd that if warranty is paying they'll only replace one damper, glow plug etc. but if it's retail, we always advise/insist they are changed as a set as it's 'good practice' and they wear/fail evenly...

We've had the same vehicle in three times this winter under extended warranty for glow plug failures, only one to go now!

£1700 will get you a lot of repair parts, should you need them, all you'll be missing out on is the loan car and the free wash....

£1700 seems like a bargain TBH. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

This is where I'm at with the 335d (still not quite sorted timing etc to jump back into an L322). I absolutely despise dealing with BMW and paying them to service the car at their exorbitant prices to keep up the warranty which the dealer loves to make difficult to claim on. Dealers are in the main pretty awful. Some are great but unfortunately they're in the minority while the majority actively reward behaviours which lead to cut corners. I guess it depends on your attitude to risk as to whether £1700 a year is worth it. For me the majority of costs in a car won't be over that, especially if using refurbed or alternative supplier parts, and servicing yourself because not paying £160p.h for labour sure saves a lot of cash!

Wondering if LR warranty will cover front knuckle failure as it’s a known problem like the crankshaft failure?

Yep, that's my thought, I don't really need a loan car and as for grinding dirt into the paintwork, I'd prefer it left dirty...

Yes the care they take of customer's cars is awful... I'm not a great fan, I took mine to a Range Rover specialist for this last warranty claim, I try to avoid dealers...

They don't cover the knuckles from what I have read, I'm well outside the vin numbers for it and mine look fine with no visible corrosion and a decent gap on the pinchbolts so not overtightened...

Even specialists give awful customer service, I took mine to the nearest specialist to me in January for a health check, They charged me for it and raised several warranty issues. We were off to Spain for some time so it was left that they would file the claim and repairs would be carried out on my return. Despite numerous phone calls and emails, which they ignored, no claim was put in. I guess they don't need the work....!!!

We came back from Spain with a few days of warranty left so I took the Rangie to another garage who made space on their ramp, at short notice and not inconsiderable hassle, they did a free check, and filed the claim that day....  Pete

Yeah, it's a Christmas tree list spec on the car but it's not well built at all. The replacement steering rack was put on at 45k and for the last 18 months I've been complaining that it's still knocking. They alternate between saying 'can't find a fault' and 'it's normal'. The fact they can't (or more likely won't) diagnose it for what is a well known issue on the VSS rack where the plastic guide bush wears is laughable. The spare part has reduced from £250 to £30 so I'm just going to get that ordered up and fit it myself next week in the hope the rest of the rack hasn't also worn so much since fitting that it won't fix it. It's the lies and obfuscation that also irritates me from the service managers because they won't let you speak to the mechanics, won't pass on your info accurately, and generally assume that the customer is an idiot. Even when you explain that you know they're telling you nonsense they double down on the lies rather than accepting that their usual nonsense won't wash. So far it's had a rack (should be two), a transfer case because BMW can't design an AWD system, multiple sensors, two front adaptive dampers, two EGR's and an airbag under recall. The problem with the AWD system is that they spec the car with staggered wheels which naturally means the tyres will be slightly different but then have a transfer case that simply can't deal with the difference unless you use BMW * spec tyres which are both crap, and expensive. And of course the system is flaky when the rears where more, and even on the XD I find the rears wear about 30% faster than the fronts.

The other issue I have is the lack of spare wheel, which means I need RFT's given the rural roads I'm on a lot, and that leaves you with one single winter tyre option in the 19" size. It's a great car and I know several people who have had good examples of them, but unfortunately the combination of it being unreliable, difficult to work on and just not suited for the current state of roads means it needs to go. I've also done 4 tyres and 2 rims on it in the last two years.

This has been the first car in nearly twenty years that I've not worked on myself and I've just found it to be a monumentally stressful experience with BMW. It actually leaves me feeling like I don't fully own it because there are so many stipulations on the warranty with regard any modifications, and I just don't trust mechanics. It's not just BMW, Parks LR in Inverness apparently don't have a single mechanic who's been there more than 18 months. And in the treatment my dad's Evoque's had in recent years since it was Macrae & Dick, it shows. They all sell the image of professionalism and experience that means nobody knows your car like they do. The reality is that they do the absolute bare minimum even if they see other parts that should be replaced at the same time, and unless it's a current model that they can go through proper training for, they don't have any more knowledge of the model than your local specialist or even normal garage.

oooh the warranty dilemma Pete. I've just renewed mine and actually managed to make a claim on it, was only for a ARB link but still, covered the whole process and MD labour, so at their rates probably just about paid for the warranty....

That said I do have to send it in again soon to investigate a persistent Airbag warning light. Im pretty sure its a loose connection on the BCM under the drivers seat as it tends to come on when I shift the seat about, then go off when I restart. I had a bang about on the connections and its stayed off for a week or so now..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

It's just sailed through it's MOT so wouldn't have used any of the MOT warranty... lets see if the gamble pays off...  Pete
