The AJV8 really doesn’t like LPG. It eats the valve seats and costs thousands to put right. Ask me how I know…

If you want LPG then look for an earlier 4.4 with the BMW engine rather than the later Jag engines 4.4 or 4.2 SC.

Hi thank you , that is what i had read, sorry i didnt write the title properly. After bmw lpg or 4.2 jag. Its a car for my wife, if i come back with a sc then ill be putting the petrol in, actually if its lpg then ill be putting that in too as she hates the process of lpg refueling

I'm not ready to part with either of mine yet but if I can't get ulez approval for my 4.4 m62 lpg I will be forced to let it go and keep the 4.2 sc sport I bought the wife. She found it to small for her needs so iv sourced a D3 v8 to replace her tdv6 D3.

An m62 4.4 on lpg is awsome

Please let me know if you do decide to sell it, probably be getting one this month as planning driving the alps in april

The 4.2 on lpg CAN be done right but they are usually not and they eat the valve seats. I’ve seen Prins vsi kits do mega miles in these with no detrimental effects … but I’ve seen loads of cheap polish kits not setup correctly killing them Current stable:

Even when done correctly the valve seats still suffer. They are too soft to run on LPG as it’s much drier and has no lubrication.

My car was running a BRC kit and set up spot on when I got it. There was no difference in performance between either fuel and it also had the valve saver fluid installed but after 80k on LPG the seats were knackered.

When buying used you’ve no idea how the kit has been set up and how badly worn the valve seats are before you start so I’d give any of them running on LPG a wide berth.

Thanks all, im tempted to roll the dice on a cheap high mileage lpg 4.2 sc as long as had arches done. If engine goes will put a second hand engine in. If i pay 6k +for a lower mileage one still a high degree of risk a range it appears, so keep a war cheat of 3k and view it as part of purchase price

I have LPG fitted on my BMW M62 4.4V8 and running okay. now Bought cheap with "misfire", so just replaced the whole engine.

Not sure why old unit went pop , but for certain piston 7 was holed. For interest the lpg was fitted when car was quite new and ran for 110,000 miles. One day I might pull the engine apart for fun. Happy to let any forensic minded member have the old unit for investigation.

OK, I'm not selling, but my 2007 (so Jag engined) vogue runs on LPG since she had 6000 miles on the counter. Now she has 120K mls and she is still doing very well. BRC with valve lube since nearly new.
A lot depends upon how they are maintained, how they are driven. So don't let horror stories form your opinion.

10 years this year for mine on lpg about 75000miles 4.2sc
Its how they are set up and maintained more than anything else imo

I think alot of the engine and gearbox problems were going to happen services or not. It looks like alot of the engines and gearboxes were built with other cars in mind, like e39 and e38 for the high rev 4.4 petrol and the jag petrol engines were also not built for very heavy cars, same for the gearboxes, no hassle in saloons, but add another tonne and a trailer and then see holes in blocks and gearboxes giving wat sooner
