Is the 4.2 particularly "steamy"

Hi all,

I've recently acquired a high mileage 4.2 and I'm still in the getting to know it stage.

The other evening after a long run on the motorway I stopped in at McDonalds drive-through (slumming it I know!) and was surprised to see condensation still coming from the exhausts. It wasn't huge levels of steam a la head-gasket but it just surprised me to still see it on a hot engine.

I do have an intermittent Low-Coolant warning but the coolant level always shows to be fine and the temp gauge is bang in the middle so it's not overheating.

I'm not overly worried, just curious, does anyone else get this? 2006 L322 Vogue SE 4.2

I'm pretty confident the Low-Coolant is just a dodgy float in the bottle as it is sometimes fine for days and then randomly comes on for a few starts and then goes again for a while. 2006 L322 Vogue SE 4.2

Not something I ever noticed on mine - although they do take a bit of warming up. I wouldn't expect to see any after 5 to 10 mins of running... Mike - MPx

They can be if it is very cold outside also remember that the temp gauge is not an actual it sits in the middle over quite a range of temperatures to get exact you need to use a 11D tool or put in a different temp gauge . So it could be bang in the middle but just be at the bottom of the range for that position.

after the combustion of a gallon of petrol one pound of that is hydrogen combines with 8 lbs of oxygen to form 9 pounds of water or 1.1 gallons of water. mine does it on startup then when up to temp it is not so visible but it will always produce a lot of water more so with the new e10 fuel if you use it . new vehicle purchase

I'm using E5 fuel.

I was expecting it when cold but not after 40mins at 70mph, I guess the exhaust system may have cooled sitting in the drive through creating more condensation, especially as or was a cooler evening. 2006 L322 Vogue SE 4.2

Mine does similar so I assume (hope!) its normal. In the cold when I am in a queue I can see it although generally on shorter trips.

Regards the coolant I have this message also. Just getting around to replacing the expansion tank as I believe like you its the sensor. Going to test the coolant to see if it needs a flush or if I can just clamp the hoses and swap the tank out. 07 4.2 Supercharged

Mine does the same especially early hours when it's cold. Took mine for a bit of a tear up last night as was somewhat stressed so let's just say I probably got it down to 6mpg, got home 45 mins later n sat there for 5 mins. Still had a bit of condensation coming off the pipes. Nothing bad, fluids all good, high mileage at 180k so I wouldn't stress tbh but you can always do a sniff test or a compression test if it worries you
