Can't agree with that, I've carried out plenty of transmission oil changes & double flushes as a restorative repair, often at the instruction of the transmission or vehicle manufacturer, they've gone on to do tens if not hundreds of thousands of miles with no evidence of excessive wear. Conversely, I've changed several of the terrible DSG transmissions that were only 8-10k over the service limit (it really is a limit with them) having tried double flushes first.

Fluid control systems need the oil to be within a pretty tight spec to perform as intended, where the oil starts to break down and lose its ability to transfer pressure properly, then you can get harshness without necessarily increasing wear, replacing the fluid at that point will restore proper operation, I do agree that if you need to use friction modifiers its just a sticking plaster on something that needs surgery.

I agree with Craig (I know Shocked Laughing )

The official interval from ZF is 50-75k miles, depending on use. Lower if it does frequent towing, off roading or high speed driving

If you notice a difference in gear change quality, and a general improvement in "smoothness" then the box was overdue an oil change
If you notice no difference at all, it was changed early enough Thumbs Up

I've had 2 changes and there was a previous change on a receipt when I purchased it - no idea what they used for the first 2 but they never changed the pan as it was leaking so had the job done properly with ZF fluid. Didn't notice any change in gearbox behaviour and it's still got a slightly harsh 1-2 upshift when on light throttle. Gearbox software update made a noticeable change in gearbox 'character' although I can't say exactly what it did other than it feels better. The reset with the accelerator pedal is a temp fix for the 1-2 change harshness but it comes back after a while. Also going to WOT / Kickdown on the M-Way sometimes makes it better afterwards. My Audi which had the ZF6 speed also had a harsh 1-2 upshift and a gearbox fluid change didn't fix that either. AFAIK you only need to do a full gearbox reset if you change internals like teh TC or valves / seals - I've left well alone. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

The car had the gearbox adaptations reset after the first change. That made it worse and took ages to smooth itself out, so I will not be doing it again!!
