It will probably be poor connections on the sender unit inside the Fuel tank - lots of us on here have suffered from it

I did find lots of info. in the electrics section, but no one seems to have a problem with the engine cutting out. |

The engine will be shut down automatically if the ECU detects no fuel, so whilst I’m no expert, I’d hope that sorted itself once you got the gauge to read correctly.

Depends on the MY I think. Or perhaps 3.6 vs 4.4. My 3.6 seemed to be fine until I fixed the dodgy connections but I've seen others post about the engine cutting out.

I also recall someone posting a temporary fix by fitting a variable resistor across the connector on the top of the tank. Worth a search. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Yup i had this on my 4.4TDV8 if fuel gauge says no fuel then engine will cut out and the pumps will stop pumping to save themselves from burning out as the diesel is the lubricant too.

Thanks for all your helpful replies. Unfortunately the tank is almost full, but I'll try going over the wiring in the next few days & report back. |

Yes, but if the gauge says it’s not, the car will believe the gauge…..

As MJDronfield has said, the fuel measurement is what the ECM takes as gospel - including the forced misfire (known as 'driver inducement') before shutdown to prevent damage to the fuel system. Unfortunately if the tank is full, you're probably going to get your arms wet...

Finally found time to take a look at the problem. I disconnected the black connector block , blue & black wires,& sprayed the contacts with Servisol but to no avail. Next I chopped out the connector & soldered the wires together & shrink tubed them. Bingo! All was well with the world, & I didn't thankfully have to drain the tank which was full.

Lucky, as taking out the in-tank sender unit connectors is a bloody messy job and not one I want to repeat ever ever again. I did mine in January, with 2/3 of a tank full - the diesel was f***ing freezing on the arms. |

Yes, I have to say I was very surprised when it worked. I was getting ready to pump out the tank. What really pi**ed me off, apart from having to wait for nearly five hours for the bloody RAC to get their act together & get me a tow truck, is Land Rover using a completely unnecessary crappy little connector, when they went to the trouble of building in a protection for the pump running dry. |
