Ugh, key issue… I’ll preface this post with “yes I have done some research”, and yes I’m still a bit confused and above all I dont want to $!ck anything up and or more importantly dont want to leave myself stranded.
2008 Range Rover L322 4.4
I have a key that’ll start the Rover and manually unlock the doors. It has zero remote functions. I ordered a replacement key from lucky8 along with the GAP IID tool. When the new key arrived it was narrower then my existing key. I called Lucky8 in order to make sure I had the right key and he told me that he had an 07 L322 and used the narrower key as a replacement for his and it worked fine, as a matter of fact he had two of the narrow style keys for his, they both cut fine and worked in the ignition. So, off I go to the locksmith/key shop to get my new key cut. They told me several things.
1. They didnt think they could cut the center groove in the new key because it was too narrow.
2. They also informed me that my existing functioning key wasnt for a 2008 Range Rover or maybe at least the body/housing of the key wasnt because it transmitted on 433 MHZ, and the 2008 Rover receives/transmits on 315 MHZ? (My new key is 315 MHZ), he also opened up both keys and the guts are not the same physically.
So, they tried to cut the new

The blades can be swapped & yes you can programme it from your GAP ID tool.
However I personally would look elsewhere for the another key / fob (with the correct blade size) then get it recut by the key shop, as he does seem to know what he's talking about & appears very helpful.

That way you still have your original key operational.

Thanks, I forgot that we did verify that the whole blade/pivoting assembly would swap over to the new housing. Still very curious what I have going on with the functioning key. If its just a 433 mhz case with 315 mhz guts and blade? Am I to assume that the chip in the housing must be at the very least statically functional in order for the blade to start the Rover? 08 l322 4.4 HSE Black/Jet.

It would appear that is the case. As far as i'm aware the 433mhz & fixed blade were pre 2007 vehicles only. You appear to have the correct type of key fob. No doubt someone else on here will confirm this.

I would search the forum & internet, as there are many posts on this subject.

Update: I just called the dealer, gave the parts department the vin# and they confirmed my Rover transmits on 315mhz, so there is that. Now, I’m going out on a limb here and I’m saying I just have a 433mhz case with 315 guts. Within that I have a non functioning or static functioning ignition key. Correct me if I’m wrong, I would at the very least need a functioning key in order to program a new key, at least in the traditional way? 08 l322 4.4 HSE Black/Jet.

That's correct & why I wouldn't muck about with the oriiginal. I think you may have to bite the bullet & get another wide blade fob on 315mhz

I recommend ordering a 315MHz key from the Land of the Rising Sun.
