Atleast I learn some more details about the 4.4 TDV8!

But the water mystery still remains..

A pin hole somewhere in the intercooler/pipework that lets water in could be a possibility, but the duration the engine is coasting with no boost so that water can enter is very limited, atleast with my driving habits. The intercooler adn pipework is also well protected from the elements with the undertray, front bumper etc.

I find it hard to believe that a pinhole can let in water of significance, but I am running out of other possible explanations. 2012 Range Rover TDV8 4.4

Very possible the car was started repeatedly very often without driving (just for charging the battery for example during selling period). In this case secondary turbo will activated during idling sometime (blowout mode). However, in this mode the IC valve will not open and not let the air inside the IC. The air from secondary turbo go via changeover valve into the prime-turbo. Turbo RPM is low, air is slightly warm (bring the dew point inside the hoses), air flow is weak and its not able to dry the condence from hoses. Condence water collecting for longer time in lowest point and finally you find the ice there.
Now you are driving normaly and no problems anymore.

That is a explenation that makes sense in my mind.

I know the seller have had the car a while and probably moved it around on their lot several times. I have also been idiling a fair bit when checking oil level after service, moving it etc.

I'll settle down with this theory for now and will check the hoses again after driving it "normally" for a while.

Thanks for all your suggestions! Smile 2012 Range Rover TDV8 4.4

On the D4 there is a similar problem. Ice buildup in the intercooler may occur and then release and destroy the turbo. For nordic markets there is a "winter kit" consisting of a vehicle front (radiator cover) without openings that should lower the probability for ice buildup. One simply shifts from the original and back autumn and spring. The function is similar to the old days radiator curtain blocking ice and snow in the ambient air from entering the radiators. The D3 had another air inlet design and was not prone to this.

I am not a FFRR owner (yet, looking and will be soon) so I don't know if there is a FFRR nordic adaption of some kind. I do know that the parking heater is a standard fit for nordic markets, as opposed to on the continent. So if a knowledgeable Scandi FFRR owner could chime in and explain if there is something else added or changed on vehicles designated for the north, that would be interesting to know. Especially when comparing continental imports to cars orginally sold up here.

Let us know if the problem come back again or not.
I also open once per year lower hoses to ensure there is no oil. Still just couple drops of oil only, so that is fine.

Interesting that it’s a known issue on the D4. I don’t know how the turbo system in TDV6/SDV6 operates, but there may be some similarities. I’ll try to find out if it’s a «winter package» for the TDV8.

I’ll report back when I have been driving a bit.

Thanks again! 2012 Range Rover TDV8 4.4

Update on my strange water/ice accumulation;

I have checked the pipework regurally. After about 6 months and 4000 km I am happy to report that there have only been a couple drops of oil so far. Seems like it was a one time incident probably due to a lot of stop/start and idiling at the dealer! 2012 Range Rover TDV8 4.4

On a side note, I can explain why there is no winter kit for L405:s. I bought one and it turns out that the radiator is encapsulated and the front inlet has electronically controlled fins.

I can't find any "winter package" for the L322. @Dartanjang do you have a part-number for the D4 kit? 2012 Range Rover TDV8 4.4

It might not be needed. This was not a problem for the D3. They changed the design of the air inlet system on the D4 and perhaps didn't calculate with ice buildup in cold climates when doing it. Therefore this was a D4 only problem at the time.

The part number may be in the text of the technical bulletin cited in a couple of the forum threads below. And the TB says that only D4 and RRS were affected, so FFRR:s (incl L322) air inlet design is perhaps different and not prone to this.
