Motoreasy Claim Experience

As few people considered Motoreasy here is my recent experience. I DO NOT recommended it. Having had number of years and claims with Approved Warranties from multiple brands, my advise is to stick to your Land Rover Warranty or self warranty.

During long Xmas tip in France 100 miles into the journey cruise control set at 80mph i got red triangle restricted performance warning. Turn the car off and back on error cleared. On the return journey again 100 miles into journey same error and clearing method. Called AA once back in UK and they cleaned MAF, airfilter etc and advised to get it checked. Issue never happened since then but never been such long journey at that constant high speed. Errors logged as below;

P0299 - Boost Pressure Control Deviation Specified Position Not Reached
P0234 - Engine Overboost condition Specified Position Not Reached
P0046 - Boost pressure solenoid valve Signal higher than expected

Called Motoreasy, they took my card details for £72 diagnostics fee and they booked the car to Land Rover Newbury main dealer to my surprise its one their network garages. So meant to be very smooth process, they deal directly with the garage and pay them themselves. Just like approved warranty i say to myself!!! Very pleased and impressed so far.

I drop the car to the dealership at 8am as booked then received call from service advisor at 12:30 they cant get authorisation from Motoreasy to start the work..... I then rang Motoreasy and after 10mins obligatory call queue spoken to a chap who was apologises and helpful and says he will do it while we are on call. 3pm another call from service advisor still not authorised in 1link system she says. I call again Motoreasy this time spoken to a lady again helpful and polite she says she would approve it while we in call and she approves it. Finally.. But obviously day is lost...

Following morning diagnostic done and main dealer says throttle body valve is sticking and recommends replacing it. £580 for part and labour and service advisor puts the the claim in at 8:45am. Service advisor calls me 2PM saying no response from Motoreasy and she cant get hold of anyone helpful.. Here i go again calling Motoreasy 3rd time. Speaking to the same chap who picked my first call day before he complains that dealer doesn't put the information in the right system and doesn't follow the process, etc. He goes and checks some systems and find the information and say he will progress it.

At the end of the day 2 Motoreasy chap calls and say its not covered as part not failed and it is just "sticking" Smile So i say what do we do? He says it can be cleaned. Then i ask ok why main dealer recommends to replacing it not cleaning it? He says thats what garages do Smile But then i say this is your trusted network garage you sent me there now you don't trust their opinion???Long silince. Also i ask what if cleaned and same issue happens again. We open new case he says.

Obviously i understand cleaning the valve may or may not fix it. Probably it will. But car is with them for 3 days and i don't to risk getting it cleaned and car looses power again so i will pay myself and replace it.

Apart from covering it or not overall as above not a good experience and lot of hassle. Clearly system not working. I would say they are trying but whole system and setup no comparison to Approved Warranty Experience and not worth it. 2017 Range Rover SDV6 AB

And in comparison, we had an L494 in with a noisy rear diff, and LRA warranty

Claim registered Wednesday AM, call from engineer Wednesday PM to arrange assessment
Turned up, looked at our oil sample, road tested the car, approved claim on the spot Thumbs Up

Not cheap, but well worth it Thumbs Up

I put a few quid away each month in an ISA as I don’t trust any warranty company. It’s an insurance product and the business model of insurers is not too pay out if they can avoid it.

Had manufacturer approved warranties for years on many different cars never had any issue. My first time with 3rd party warranty as i bought the car privately and they really dont worth the paper they written on.

He says valve not failed, its just go sticky so it doesn't open/close Smile Well how else it could fail? Its job is to open and close Smile 2017 Range Rover SDV6 AB

It’s had it, mine was ‘sticking’ solution was to replace it with a new part - genuine LR part is around 160 if you can get one, takes a couple of hours if you do the donut hoses while you’re mucking about with it.

I’m with DrRob, Aftermarket warranties just aren’t worth the money.

I was going to just pay myself and move on as i authorised the work to the dealer already. But it bugged me a lot more than it should for some reason. Probably i really could not take the reason for their decline saying part not failed just valve is sticking...

So i turned nasty to them which resulted a call from their senior customer relationship manager who had some sense. He apologised and admitted whole process been shambles. He took the case himself, they asked for;
- Full Service History Records,
- Health Check Video of now
- Health Check Video of the last service from Sep 2022 - Brakes and oil leak were advisory here
- They asked invoices for brakes and oil leak as a proof that they were both done.

Luckily i had all these very handy and submitted to them and in couple of hours claim approved. £670 total bill, they will pay £530. But because i authorised the work myself they advised me to pay the dealer for the full amount and they will sent me £530. All written in the mail.

I collected the car yesterday and will update here when they actually sent me the money.

So i would say they are not the worst company. At least they care, you can talk to someone when you call, etc. But all of above just far too much. Specially comparing to hassle free approved warranties. 2017 Range Rover SDV6 AB

I'd never have one of these aftermarket warranties. At the end of the day, they are a business out to make money. If it breaks, just pay to get it fixed or fix it yourself. Simples.

Sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience Memzy. Fingers crossed, you'll magically get the cheque in the post with no further headaches or effort on your part. Kev

They are not all bad.

My Disco 4 snapped its crank so needed a new engine.

One phone call from the garage to Warranty Direct and it was approved. £12000.

Laughing

Glad I didn’t jump into this discussion a little too early like the OP Very Happy

@KNWatkins:

You viewpoint is appreciated of course, but some of us are put in the position where the previous owner allowed the JLR Warranty to lapse, and so no longer an option, and may not afford to set aside e.g. £15K for a new engine. Yes, we all know what insurers are, and motor manufacturers aren’t much better (think L405 front knuckle joints) IMHO, so at best it’s a distress purchase and a gamble, but one we hope is better than nothing, and which may protect us from at least the worst financial hit. Equally, there are two sides to every story, and the public have tried every trick in the book to scam insurance firms with fraudulent claims over the decades, so who can blame them for being careful about the genuineness and provenance of every claim?

Either way, Warranty or no warranty, it’s a risk; it’s up to each of us to make up our own minds, whichever way.

FWIW, regarding ME, I have not specifically recommended this company to anyone on this forum, only provided information about their product and my experience in haggling for the best deal. Fortunately, I have not found it necessary to make a claim thus far. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Yep, I get that Gremlin. They are an insurance company at the end of the day. Lots of people pay in, the majority don't claim and the minority do, otherwise they wouldn't be in business.

The fact is that financially, the majority lose out, the minority who make a claim win and the company makes a profit after their operating costs.

I get the reasoning behind having such a policy for those who cannot afford to get their car repaired should it fail. Personally though, I wouldn't buy a car that I couldn't financially maintain myself, but that's me. I get that probably most do not share this mindset.

Rob has a good point that instead of a warranty, putting a some money in a separate account is a good way of saving for the majority of repairs. This may not cover the cost of a new engine but over the years, depending on the amount put in on a regular basis but should cover the many unforseen costs.

I appreciate everyone has a difference set of circumstances and everyone should make the decision that's right for them. Kev

Yes we are an odd breed, we trawl around to find the cheapest policy/part/service etc. and are then surprised when it’s not as good as the more expensive version.
Slightly off topic but an example of the public behaviour, I was in a local Bentley dealership collecting some filters to service my old car when a well dressed chap started kicking off at the service desk. His service invoice included a software update and he hadn’t asked for it. The young lass behind the desk said she would see if it could be reversed-he didn’t want that as they had already “ruined his car”, he wanted the bill to be waived instead.
The service manager turned up and very firmly pointed out that as the car was leased it wasn’t his, he had no say in the matter and incidentally could he pay the 3 months of arrears on his contract before taking the car away.
By this time I’d ran out of reasons to be hanging around so I never saw the outcome.
We’re all keen on knocking dealers/insurers etc. (me included) but they don’t always have an easy time.

Everyone's look to risk mitigation is different and I respect them all. I generally buy my cars outright never keep them more than couple of years. I am happy to loose in depreciation in that couple of years but not happy to pay for repair.

Even i only got this 2017 car for short time while awaiting delivery of my L460 i still want to have peace of mind. And if there is a product on the market that promises to cover something i expect it be covered. And i believe its our responsibility as consumers to inform each other and keep these companies right. I understand some choose not to buy these products and self insure themselves which is probably the best answer to these companies. 2017 Range Rover SDV6 AB

Motoreasy have now paid me £530 of the total £670 bill which is as per the policy. Policy states %80 percent of the parts for car over 5 years old and full cost of labour up to £120 per hour + VAT with first £50 contribution from me. They also had special discounted rate agreement with the main dealer at £105ph which put the hourly rate under my policy limit.

Considering i paid near £1k for 2 years of Plan A cover not bad result. They were selling 2 years warranty for the price of 1 year at the time so it comes at £500 per annum.

Going forward will I let the approved manufacturer warranty run out and get Motoreasy? Considering the hassle process above NO. Happy to pay higher premium and stay with manufacturer hassle free.

However if I get any car without warranty on then probably will consider Motoreasy again based on the fact they have senior people who are approachable and cares. 2017 Range Rover SDV6 AB
