Are they considered a superior engine/gearbox? They must be rare as most 4.4 V8s I have come across have the BMW engine etc |

Thanks, good advice. What sort of money do the 4.2 fetch? For a well looked after one? |

Thank you that's very helpful. Definitely not that much in it and going for a petrol with the lower road tax makes the difference even less. |

Not too sure if that's relevant - the one I bought had spent all of it's life inland & still had tinworm in the usual places. Coastal towns may have a salty atmosphere but get less salt spread on the roads to spray the undersides, whilst inland roads can often have more spread salt on them during the winter months. and then you would also have to know where every past owner has lived, and that is no longer possible due to GDPR

I’ve had a 2008 3.6 TDV8 and now have a 2009 4.2 supercharged. I used to do 12,000 miles per year in the TDV8 and now do 5,000 miles per year in the 4.2. I do miss the torque of the diesel but I have to say there’s a lot less to go wrong on the 4.2 (no EGRs, or turbos - which killed the TDV8, or DPF on later diesels). I lucked out finding a really clean 4.2 supercharged at a dealer, it’s been great since then but I have my eyes open and know what it costs to keep an L322 running in good shape. I think there’s a lot to be said for a clean petrol powered L322 if you’re not doing big annual mileages. ---------------------------------------

I fit into the low annual mileage category. If I don't do the 3 long trips I am thinking of this year, I thinks my annual average mileage might be as low as 3000 to 4000........

Yeah it’s not an exact science. The 1000 mile journey above is purely theoretical. Straight road for the whole journey. No braking. Steady speed. Completely and utterly impossible. But just to illustrate the bare mathematical difference in the 2 fuels X cost X MPG etc. If I’m honest I think I will still go for the TDV8. Only working 2 days a week after retirement from my main profession leaves plenty of time for random 50 mile journeys to keep a diesel engine in good order !!! |

I’m still sticking to a petrol one and see how I go. Can always change if it doesn’t work out but I’m looking forward to trying the V8. |
