Germany 2019 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Montalcino Red

I wonder if my RR reads the forum. As the last 2 active Regen cycles have removed enough KM from the next service. I will be doing an oil change the day before driving to Italy.

I brought jugs just for the oil. SDV8 AB MY 2020

This time I will use Castrol. A friend will be bringing me 20L of Smith & Allen in January so will have the next couple sorted.

I have ordered a 15L extractor, so should be able to remove the oil in one go. I can attach to my compressor if I feel lazy.

My neighbour has said I can use her driveway to do the oil change. I have lots of cardboard to put under the car. For drips from the filter or other spills. SDV8 AB MY 2020

I am also in the countdown situation to interim OC, funny how the dealer service is always in Summer, and the owner service is in the depths of Winter? Obviously, all FFRR’s must be the same, of course Banging Head No doubt a clever ploy by JLR to dissuade owners from tinkering with their own cars Censored Censored Censored Whistle Laughing “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

It said to warm the car to running temp before sucking out the oil. Do you drive around or just have the engine running?

I assume that you turn off the engine and then wait 10 minutes. Just like you were going to get an oil level reading. SDV8 AB MY 2020

Just warm it up to allow easy flow of the oil, you certainly dont want oil at 90+C scalding etc
I just get it about 40C, and yes, leave it for at least 15-20 mins to allow all the oil to settle back into the sump.

I always used to give it a drive round in a lower gear than usual, get the temperature up to mid-point and start draining straight away. Crack the filter off, remove the filler cap - the return oilways are sufficiently large that the oil will get back to the sump quickly, otherwise you'd end up with the rocker covers full of the stuff... Draining the oil will take ~15 minutes or so, that will be plenty of time for everything not in a pressure oilway to give way to gravity. There's no benefit in waiting for the remnants to get back to sump before you start draining, you'll lose the heat and therefore the lower viscosity.

You have a good point about not too hot if using suction method with plastic pipes & vessel, -imagine if a pipe gets too hot & soft and blows off, oil everywhere: Censored Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

I've used one of the Jabsco oil extractors for many years, never had a problem with a pipe softening or coming loose (mainly because they're under suction not pressure) even with an engine that's had an enthusiastic drive around for 20 mins or so

I would add that the oil does cool quite quickly so if you're working outside, be aware of wind chill, especially at this time of year.

I remember the WM and was reading the process there. Along with my question it seems clear.

Most of the YouTube video do it in a different order than the WM. Which is replace the filter then drain. They seem to drain then replace the filter. I can’t see this making a difference but…

I am going to end up with oil for a few changes. I have 20L from S&A that I will get some time in January, when my friend drive over here.

I ordered 10l online. It now won’t arrive on time. So I will buy some oil today.

But I covered for the next year. SDV8 AB MY 2020

I use a little 12v pump to pump my engine oil out.

It only cost me about £10 and drains 9.4 litres of engine oil in a couple of minutes.

It looks the same as the pump on your Jabsco unit Phoenix.

The reason for replacing the filter first is to allow the oil in the filter housing to drain back to sump, if you did it after draining the sump, you'd have around 0.5l of old oil going back to be mixed with the new oil.

That pump does look very similar, I liked the Jabsco because it was self contained, I could transport the waste oil safely ane even in the workshop I could send the car up on the ramp to do other stuff whilst the oil was draining, again, with no worries about spillage. That said, for a tenner it's worth the extra effort in collecting the waste oil.

So I had to visit 2 shops today to get oil for the change. Not many places carry that oil and also not many bottles if they do.
The pump is due in the morning so I am ready to go. SDV8 AB MY 2020
