I find myself on the horns of a dilemma - and I’d appreciate any input from forum members. I’ve had my 54 plate TD6 now for 5 years now, during which time it’s wanted for nothing - although has also given me plenty of opportunities to need to dip into my wallet!
Anyway, it’s in for its MoT tomorrow and I have no doubts that it will pass, and any advisories are sorted out before the following MoT. It’s had a recon gearbox, headlining has been replaced, stereo update done by an audio specialist, new air on and suspension compressors - I’m sure you get my drift. Tasks still to be done yet are getting the alloys refurbished and a crease taken out of a front wheel arch - but recently it has become apparent that it could do with a torque converter replacement.
I’m about to get some money after a death in the family and my wife thinks that I should spend some of it on getting a newer car. I had a look at a number of 4x4s to replace the Range Rover, budget limit is around £15K but although many of them had good points, none of them was a Range Rover - I seem to have ‘the bug’.
Anyway, this is where your opinions would be appreciated. Do I use the money to get the TC, alloys and crease sorted and keep running it? Get the Tc done and trade it in for a newer/better model and trade it in? Trade it in as is but with the new MoT? Or sell it privately for whatever I can get?
Been mulling this over for a couple of weeks but still can’t make my mind up - so your thoughts/input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. L322 TDV8 4.4 - current

If fuel isnt an issue a SC is worth a thought but if upgrading to any FF keep road tax within your budget good luck

Always gonna be a difficult one, but it’s not going to get any younger… and neither is your future replacement….

£15k seems like a healthy budget to get a newer L322…. Can get a nice 4.4TDV8 for that.

But if you want to go the “least risk” regarding losing your current ride, can you afford to hold on to it, buy a newer one, then move it on once you are happy with the newer one? Then if you decide the newer one isn’t for you, you can still go back to old faithful…..🤔

A newer L322 will still need plenty of ££ to run and repair it. Even the last ones are 10yrs old. If I had that purchase budget I'd want at least £5k in reserve as a contingency. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Interesting dilemma, and totally understand your points of view. I personally think that cars take a dip around 80k miles and need things like bushes, suspension, gearbox fluids, and other reasonable ticket items which generally tire at around 80k or the 7-9 year mark. Once you get through that dip, the car goes on for a good while again.

If you change, and get below that mileage / age you may have to get the new one through that dip again if you know what I mean. A late l322 is going to be hitting that dip area given the last ones were 2013.

Then there is aspect of getting another of the same … which leads to the comparison against what you got rid of.

My first l322 was a 02 plate 4.4. Loved it. Regret selling it for Freelander, then went back to an 08 4.2 supercharged. Loved it, but not as much the first one. I actually preferred the original l322 dash style compared to the later ones … was just nicer and more cohesive imho … and that was a thought that carried through the time of owning the supercharged … I always compared it to the original one I had.

I sound a bit down on the idea, but there is a lot to be said for the change too. You get everything freshened up if you find a nice one. The seats will have many years less wear and farts on them, the paint work, the wheels, the tech inside. Then the engines and gearbox, compared to the td6 the tdv8 4.4 are leagues ahead, and to be honest are probably very much worth changing to. V8 or else ...

I had a TD6. The only thing I miss are the better seats that are more comfortable and heat up quicker.

The 3.6 with its 6 speed gearbox is a significant upgrade and although I haven't driven one, the 4.4 looks a significant upgrade again.

May I ask what's the corrosion like on your TD6? On L322's it's always an issue.

i have td6 for 17 yrs still go strong .work out how much to fix the jobs done you may 15 grand for another lot of money what ever you get the car you get still going to be old and money needing to be spent ?

Well, didn’t get through first time - front driveshaft boot split but once that’s done I’ll be back on the road again. I’m having a look around to see what’s available locally, but I still haven’t made my mind up on whether to stick or twist - I’ll keep you posted. L322 TDV8 4.4 - current

Have you considered second car? Whilst the current FF is getting on a bit - you know the car. Its wanted for nothing but that is not going to increase its value from (I say respectfully) a fairly low level now.

Its all about preference and personal circumstances but i think I'd look for a old fun car with my 15k such as a Classic RR or knackered old Defner just to have some fun knowing the TD6 is wrapped up in the garage!

The plot thickens - I went to look at a lovely TDV8 4.4 this morning, on an 11 plate in really good condition with a full service history. Haven’t committed yet but I’m now considering keeping the TD6 and doing the couple of jobs that it will need so that I can get a reasonable price for it when I sell it and running the 4.4 while I do that - a couple of you have suggested that.
