So far so good! Oil Cooler Replacement / Suspension Drop

A bit of positive news today! (Less good news below!)

Before the weather changed for the worse, I finally changed the old, leaky oil cooler on my 2012 TDV8, cleaning out the plenum and replacing the hoses while I was at it. Rather than faff about with gaskets, I just replaced the whole unit.

I was very, very careful removing the old cooler assembly to avoid water/oil contamination and all went well. Thanks to the guide here in the Wiki, the job was surprisingly easy and I am very pleased with the results. The whole thing theoretically took me only 3 hours to complete. That’s not including the plenum cleaning - THAT took a whole day on its own!

1500km of leak-free motoring later and apart from the remaining burning oil smell after a decent autobahn run (charging along at over 100mph/160kph this afternoon), the car is behaving perfectly.

Last week I put a set new Pirelli Scorpion All Seasons with the noise-cancelling foam on the car and what a difference it makes. It really is almost silent on the road - you can now hear the rumble of the V8 rather nicely. Win win! To add to the general positivity, the FBH is working perfectly too. What a car! Laughing

Next up, complete brake overhaul and general service including gearbox, and then, once the winter’s over, I’ll be replacing bushes etc and then I should have a decent, up to date car for the foreseeable!

The only minor annoyance of late was a one-time general drop of the air suspension on all four corners - the night after changing the tyres (the whole car was raised on a lift) - and the first time we had sub-zero temps this year. Since then it’s been fine. Running through the heights works fine - the compressor only came on the once to top up the system. Should I be looking out for something there? There’s no “official” jacking procedure for the air suspension is there? VAG products are very fussy about that, but I’ve never heard of it on our FFs…

Now I’m just waiting for a decent flurry of snow to have a bit of fun on the road! -------------------------

I've never known any air sprung LR have issues with being jacked up - unlike Volvo, VWG, MB etc. etc.
It sounds to me like there was plenty of warm air in the suspension that contracted when the temperatures dropped and consequently lowered during it's periodic self-levelling process.
I've just replaced all four tyres on mine, I didn't realise just how much the old ones were compromising the road noise & handling.

Could be a temperamental height sensor throwing a spurious height reading due to being extended beyond it's normal range which the ECU tries to correct by lowering the car. Keep an eye on it but if it's a one off don't get worried. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
