Bulletproofing a l322

Hello all.
Ao the title is i guess fairly self explanitory. Can you bullet lroof an early l322? I say early l322 because this is the model that actually appeals to me the most. Not sure if its the shape or the lights or what not but yeah. Anyhow i was considering a td6, yes i know they are "slow" but for the milage i may be doing as long as it can cruise at 70mph im not looking to set new 1/4mile times. Can these be "bulletproofed"? I know the gm trans is a big weak point and i know there are a long list of electrical issues. Can a aftermarket ecu like a motec or haltec be swapped in would this solve or potentially help reduce eletrical issues. What can be done apart from servicing to help improve the reliability of the eas etc i will be doing in excess of 2k km a week

If I was driving 2,000 km's a week I would be looking for something I would be able to service as readily and easily as possible. And perhaps not 20 years old? Seems like there's a couple of conflicting requirements here TBH. 2012 Supercharged L322

I have a 2014 hilux, have had landcruisers, rangers, jeeps dodge rams. None of them are cheap to service or maintain. Spent 3k fixing problems in a brand new landcruiser. 2k for new ecu in a px2 ranger. Jeep ate axles. I am mechanically capable. Ive found older vehicles to overall be better and longer lasting then anything new. used to do 3k km a week in a defender 130

Haha no. Only thing i ever had go wrong was a wheelbearing on one of the front axles went while i was out west. Drove 400km and replaced the half shaft. It was a tdi. Frequent preventative maintenance never really had an issue.

IMHO Bullet proof and L322 do not belong in the same sentence...

You don't buy a L322 because of it's reliability or easy and cheapness of repairing it... Rolling Eyes Pete

buy B6 version. Maybe will fail like others, but instead will be few times more expensive to fix.
In addition will be bulletproof.

I had a TD6 and had 1 major issue with it and that was the GB, it failed but not untill i had put on 25k. And had i serviced the GB it would probably have lasted longer than that.
Anyhow 3k later and a new GB and TC later it was a great car. The engine never let me down once and i serviced it every 6k.
Electrically i had no issues with it and everything worked.
It was starting to rust up around the rear arches in the usual places.

When i got rid of it she had 180k on the clock (This was 2 years ago) and i know the dealer that brought it is still driving it around. He said it was too nice to scrap but too old for his forcourt so it is the run around! 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current
2014 Navara V6 - Gone
2004 Vogue TD6 - Gone
Grand Cherokee - Gone
Discovery V8 (LPG) - Gone
Discovery TD5 - Gone

I thought you were asking about actual armor Laughing Literal bulletproofing of the L322 is far more realistic an endeavor than figurative against breakdowns... Rolling with laughter

With that said, I've been daily driving an 04MY M62 and there is practically no system on it that I haven't had to intervene in one way or another over the past 3 years and 70K km. Mind you, it wasn't a bad example for the age or mileage when I bought it, to begin with. Also, no shortcuts have been taken in maintenance and while I have somewhat relaxed now, I wouldn't be too surprised if something really big was to happen at any time. It just CAN'T be trusted. I still get a kick every time I safely make it back from whatever wilderness (several hundred km from home) I've been wandering though. Akin to russian roulette Whistle







If reliability is your main requirement, I would humbly suggest you to seek the usual Japanese make with less than a quarter million km on it. Trying to "bulletproof" the FF is futile.

Owning and running a 20YO L322 is more of a hobby or a vice, if you will. You're better off without unless you genuinely derive some sort of enjoyment out of it.

PS: A good tow truck / roadside assistance subscription is an absolute must.

To the OP.
If the gearbox needs fixing, make sure you put upgraded bits in it.Google is your friend here.
I have a TD6 that I knew the gearbox wasnt going to last when I bought it.
Had the GB rebuilt and the guy that rebuilt it said...Every 20000 k,s drop the fluid and put new fluid in it.
Normally its around 6.5 ltrs that gets reenewed.
Have done 140000ks and the gearbox is running sweet as.

I have run mine for 10 plus years and it is now on 230k + and it has never failed I do do a bit of preventative maintenance . Engine oil every 6k diffs and gearbox every 30k and anything slightly wrong with the suspension replaced before it goes wrong and I have to say it has performed magnificently
