Hi Steve, I'm based in Wiltshire and would be interested to take a look if still available. I don't have enough posts to send you a PM so perhaps you could drop me a PM with a phone number/email? Thanks, Leo

Still for sale.....

Because I had an interesting experience tonight. Phone call, negotiate a price sight unseen, eventually turn up to see it an hour late. Two blokes - one keeps me talking wanting to see whether there is any sign of water leak in the boot - reasonable question. Other one pops the bonnet and I can't see what he's doing.

10 mins of looking around - can we got for a drive? Yes, but I am driving.

RESTRICTED PERFORMANCE immediately on starting the car. Drives but completely gutless.

I ask whether the one looking under the bonnet has unplugged anything? Of course not, wouldn't do that!

Get home - pop bonnet - before I can get to the front of the car they've opened the bonnet. (My guess, they have plugged back in whatever they unplugged - MAF sensor?). Good look around, nothing untoward - except copious used engine oil all down drivers side of the engine block and some on the top engine cover. They try to say that obviously turbo has blown (which it clearly hasn't). They must have poured the oil down carelessly and spilt some on the cover. A good look and there is a good puddle on the drive where it was originally parked.

I firmly say that they clearly won't be interested in a faulty vehicle and firmly escort them off the premises. All before they have a chance to try to negotiate scrap value for a RR with blown turbo, which is I presume is the conclusion of the scam.

Once they've gone, good check over and take the car for a drive - all perfectly fine as I would expect.

Frankly I'm furious at the attempted scam.

Anyone ever had similar? Is this sort of thing common?

I've had six people arrange to view and not turn up now. Whatever is wrong with people? Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Hugely frustrating … as Craig knows only too well … had the same on my SL55 AMG a month or so ago …. Same thing other than they actually poured the oil directly into the coolant system as well as all over the engine ….

Claimed blown head gasket ….. and tried to negotiate scrap deal …

Equally escorted them off the premises, was thrown by the fact that the oil was black and rubbish and I’d literally just picked mine up from being serviced by Craig so knew it had fresh oil … luckily at my apartment in London with CCTV everywhere …..

Had it recovered to Craig’s and poor Censored had to spend days flushing the system out and clearing up the mess …

Luckily sold to a really nice guy in the end … but so frustrating. Stephen Gazard

It seems strange to me that they believe that will work

My first instinct if that genuinely happened would be to refuse any sale and try and fix / diagnose the problem before relisting it. If you've got circa 10k in your head that you want for the car, you're hardly likely to knock off a few grand there and then, are you?

I guess there is little risk and no cost in giving it a go. I knew my vehicle well and have enough technical knowledge to see right through the scam immediately. Not everyone will have that knowledge and if one tries often enough, then sooner or later it may see success. The potential gain is significant.

In some ways, it feels a bit like the spam email problem. Literally thousands of messages can be sent at very little risk and cost. Almost everyone will see right through it and not be drawn in, but if a fraction of 1% get drawn in, then the gains can be worthwhile.

It does feel like I have been subjected to an attempted fraud and I have briefly considered reporting the matter to the police. I do believe what happened was, in fact, criminal damage. However I have decided not to waste the police's time because any damage caused is slight and easily rectified; there was no actual fraud because I didn't let it get to that; I have absolutely no credible evidence of illegal activity.

I really wanted to understood whether others have experienced this and, to some extent, I am reassured that I am not alone. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

I think you ought to report it to the police. You the contact details and names they gave you, whilst they might be false, there may be some connection the police could put together and prevent someone becoming a victim of this scam.

I've heard this story many times and unfortunately it's all part of the risk involved in selling privately along with the many ways you can get scammed over how the money is paid - counterfeit cash, PayPal and money transfer scams. Also even if this goes right you can end up with buyers returning claiming something is wrong and demanding money back / off (with threats) etc. I know you loose ££ trading in at a dealer but I'd rather pay that not have the hassle TBH. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
