It's all a money making scam, as it's always been.

Was a shock when I realised this too. Best to pay it in one go than pay even more on the monthly.

My 4.2 supercharged snuck into the £360 tax bracket by a few days, now diesel is 20p a litre more than petrol it almost feels affordable to run

£600 is a bargain. Spain is at lease double that .

Is this road tax the cost of registration or an additional charge?

Does it vary by year model?

For example, in my State in Australia, my annual registration cost is $0 because I’m a pensioner. My wife’s car costs $0 as she’s also a pensioner. We get one free rego each. However, my XJR1300 motorbike costs $69. Ron B. VK2OTC

It’s an additional charge based on emissions which is why older RR get hammered. Newer ones with much lower emissions still get hammered because they fixed that loop hole by adding extra tax until it’s 5 years old.

The motorist has always been a cash cow in the UK. Every litre of fuel you buy the government gets the lions share. Then there’s speeding tickets, parking fines, low omission zone charges, congestion charges and even tolls on some roads and bridges

I think it’s fair to say the government would be f####d without the motorist

At least our petrol, while expensive, is still cheaper than the UK (not as cheap as the USA. though). Today 95RON is $2.029/litre (£1.14/litre). Ron B. VK2OTC

You pay the higher tax on the first registration based on emissions and then the premium for the next 5 renewals so effectively 6 years till the tax drops on 2017 and newer cars. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

200 TDi discovery bobtail gone
RR classic v8 bobtail gone
300 tdi Discovery 3 dr gone

UK road tax for me works out at the equivalent cost of 1/3 tank of fuel per month (Was nearer 1/4 a while back) i.e it's one of the cheapest aspects of L322 running costs  2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I doubt that any EVs are on the road for free - if any of them ever were... unless funded to be on the road to push the fibs...

EV running presently is more expensive than petrol or diesel, unless using a funded fleet car, and more and more taxes are being added to them and more will come in the very near future.

The idea is to take away the freedom of driving from normal everyday tax-paying folk...

The only 'news' source that isn't talking about them is the MSM 'news' - this IS what certain cities and towns are trying to push... can't believe anyone would believe them to be tinfoil hat territory. THEY ARE talking openly about them - even though residents are protesting to stop them - but again the MSM won't cover these protest events, as they are not in their interests: ie Gates is funding them to keep their gobs shut!
