Pirelli Scorpion Zero with PNCS or Not

Hi,

I've recently purchased a 2011 4.4 TDV8. The previous owner had mismatched tyres on the rear and Toyo's on the front. Although they're not too worn, i've decided to stump for a full set of Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season tyres to hopefully restore the sure-footedness on the road. I'm looking for the quietest ride, so was particularly excited about the PNCS system.

I've been delving into the depths of tyre specifications and was looking for some advice. My tyre size should be 255/50 20, I've seen numerous posts advocating for the 55 depth profile and managed to pick up a set of 255/55/20 Y rated all seasons for £196 per corner fitted.

Now, after having a look on the Pirelli website I can see that they offer three variants in the 255/55/20 size: W rated + PNCS, W rated without PNCS and Y rated without PNCS. There is no option for Y rated with PNCS. Therefore, it seems o=unlikly that mine will come with the PNCS.

In the 255/50/20 size there is an option for W rated with PNCS or W rated without PNCS.

All of the decibel ratings for the tyres are the same (which seems a bit strange given then some have PNCS and some don't).

Anyway, i was wondering what people's thoughts were: Should I pay the extra £40 per corner and get W-rated with PNCS; i.e. is it worth it and, if so, would it be better to revert to the 255/50/20 size.

Also of note is that my car would have come with Y-rated tyres from factory (Pirelli Scorpion's presumably) - therefore, is the Y-rated all season without PNCS the more sensible way to go.

I can't give you a direct comparison of those two tyres, but I have 255/55r20 Pirelli All-Seasons with PNCS on my L322 and they are a remarkably quiet tyre.

Don't get too hung up on the speed rating - you will never go that fast..... I'd recommend you also get a full 4 wheel alignment otherwise you could chew through tyres very quickly but also be prepared to have to replace some suspension arms and joints as these have the adjusters on which may be seized. Also be aware that with the bigger tyre the speedo will have no error margin and mine was actually under reading the real speed by 1mph but this can be adjusted in the GAP IID tool. Lastly your spare in the boot will be undersized so if you get a puncture you won't be able to drive very far so think about buying a full size spare wheel. So although I think the bigger tyre size is better it's not without issues. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

We've got Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Seasons in 255/50/20 W with NCS on our 2007 4.2 Supercharged and our 2012 4.4 TDV8 and I have to say they are incredibly quiet.

At around 50-60 on the motorway they are virtually silent.

Originally we were going to order Michelins but saw that the Pirellis with NCS were 3db quieter so ordered them instead. Am incredibly pleased we did now as they are fantastic. I'd not hesitate to order these again.

I ordered them from Camskill and they were delivered within 24hrs. In Nov 2011 when I ordered them they were £755 inc delivery for a set of 4.

We stuck to 50 profiles for both as messing around with tyre sizes has never really appealed to me tbh. I don't like the idea of an insurance company having the slightest "out" should anything go wrong.

I contacted my insurance company (Admiral) and asked about tyre size and speed rating and they said it didn't matter. Wheel size would be an issue if it wasn't OE (19 or 20") 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Not really relevant or helpful but Insurance companies are always surprising, I fitted replacement alloys to my RR I rang them and told them they sent me 25 quid back as they were genuine JLR alloys. So I rang them again and asked if I changed back to the original alloys (Obviously JLR) what would happen - nothing but I could keep the 25quid - bizarre. +1 here for PNCS they were noticeably quieter than the previous Verde's on both the L322 and L405, I have also had a couple of repairs without issue as well which is often touted a reason not to have them. Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I have the new Scorpion Zero PNCS tyres in my Overfinch In 22" and I can confirm they are noticeably quieter than normal tyres. Really quite.impressive. I mean they want to be at nearly £1100 for 4 Laughing

Thanks for everyone’s thoughts. I think I’m going to stick with what I’ve picked. I don’t doubt that that foam pads help the sound, but I’m sure the fresh modern rubber will be a big improvement over what on it just now, and this way I’m keeping myself right with the load and speed ratings.
