I have owned my 2007 4.2SC for five months now and have spent endless hours reading through this site. It is a fantastic resource.

I am in New Zealand and the car is a recent import from Japan. I have put 6,000km on it and it has just clicked over the 100,000 km mark. It is mostly in very good condition, no rust, running well and the local mechanic reckons it's all sweet.

But.... I know the day will come when i need more than a very basic OBD tool. I'm about to get a front control arm changed, and I will be putting AT tyres on soon, so there may be a need for EAS adjustment.

So the question is - Should I buy a GAP iid tool (expensive) or is there anything else out there that will do the same job?

This website has been going for a long while, and my car is 15 years old, and I sometimes find myself reading ancient posts ( eg Land Rover's official list of tyres which are now superceded) and wonder what is now the best tool for the job?

Yep, GAP all the way. I too deliberated but once bought never looked back.

Go for the GAP IIDTOOL BT definitely,

I bought a 100€ cheap one first and it never gave me any proper info and was hard to connect ... --> BIN
Got a GAP and it's really good, it is fine tuned for a FFRR.

it's a good investment. "it needs some intelligence to undestand you may not have enough"

Gap IID is not only one of the best tools but the backup and help from the makers is 100%, this on it's own makes it a no brainer  Pete

I took the plunge and ordered one from Island 4x4 and one week later it is with me in NZ. Dispatched quickly and DHL did their magic.

The set up was fiddly and frustrating, with updates for PC and phone app taking over an hour. But eventually sorted.

I have now had a play with it on the car and it has identified one fault I didn't know I had - heated mirrors not working. Where I live I have seen one frost in 27 years, so not a big issue. All the other error codes were from a couple of days after I bought it, when we tried to reinstate the original head unit (fitted in the rear left electronics compartment). Unsuccessfully, as the original wiring loom was gone and so I still use a Japanese language Panasonic unit. But that's OK.

I can see that I will be exploring a whole lot of stuff that I have no understanding of. And undoubtedly hours on this forum gleaning knowledge from all those that share so willingly. Many thanks. Cheers.

You won't regret it and if you need to sell they are worth nearly as much used as new so you won't loose much. The GAP diagnostics team are really good at answering questions as well but here and on the GAP site FAQ there is plenty of info. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
