Low battery warning question

So, not technically a problem as it doesn't stop me doing anything, but every now and then if the doors are open for a while, or when I'm camping going in and out of the car getting stuff, the dashboard comes up saying 'low battery start engine'

Now when the car is running I am getting around 14.3v on the terminals
When off getting about 12.43v
The low voltage warning kicks in at 12.15v

The car never ever fails to start and never sounds like its struggling. I tried replacing it with a brand new Halfords AGM battery with BMS reset which made absolutely no difference and was still showing as 12.4v when the car was off.

I am confident I don't have a long standing residual drain as the voltage doesn't drop overnight and car starts fine. But the battery doesn't seem to want to hold its charge anything over 12.4v.

Anyone got any further ideas? To me it seems either the BMS trigger point is too high or the battery isn't getting fully charged

I was recommended buying a smart charger to get the battery to 100% but I don't see that as a fix as surely when I stop using the charger it's just going to end up around 12.4v again

My older 4.4 tdv8 had a non AGM yuassa battery fitted and never experienced any issues.

I turned my interior courtesy lights off when the doors were going to be open for a while. I've just replaced all the interior lights with LED's so I can just leave them on now Thumbs Up

It was a deliberate design feature that the AGM battery never gets fully charged and the nearer 80% charge is reached, the car automatically reduces the charging current.
It is fully described in the W.M.

As above…. If you keep the interior light switch pressed in for a few seconds, it will flash and be disabled till you turn them back on again, using the same process. Might help a bit if you are in and out the car a lot.

There was also an issue with the “Low Battery…..start engine” message coming up too early… think that was resolved with a software update. Mine is the same….. it’s all a bit sensitive 🤣

Gone are the days when you could wash your car with the radio on….

Hi Ben
============
My older 4.4 tdv8 had a non AGM yuassa battery fitted and never experienced any issues
==============

I have a new Napa 90aH non AGM battery on my 2011 ( only installed about 2 weeks ago ) and get "Low Battery" message on the new "Lead Acid" battery most mornings, my old battery was the original and did really well to last that long, but with winter coming I wanted to get a new one

I even trickle charged it with my CTEK 5.0 for a few days to check that I did not get a duff new battery, but it's absolutely fine

I think many others have commented, the BMS has been setup to be very sensitive to battery conditions, and if it's not spot on, the message pops up, but so far, I have to say, it starts perfectly fine on the button - so I'm ignoring it for now !

@Ben,

I can recommend getting one of these: £20.12 38% Off | KINGBOLEN BM580 Car Battery Tester 12V 6V CCA Circut Tester Cranking Test Charging Tool BM550 Automotive Battery Analyzer Kw208
https://star.aliexpress.com/share/share.ht...ocialShare

Great bit of kit, reliable seller, and so cheap for such a usefull tool, and yes I paid the full price for it!

Also, having similar issues with an Evoque and Vogue L405 due to residual drain and short journeys, I got a CTEK MXS5 and never looked back. Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Thanks for all your replies

I bought this is the end to see if it helps any, I got it for just over £50 with my trade card and comes with a 5yr warranty too. I left t on charge overnight see what happens

https://www.halfords.com/motoring/tools/ga...16453.html

It will do for my discovery and her car too I suppose. Apparently it can repair batteries and analyse cranking voltages, alternator health etc. I'm not expecting much but worth a shot I guess.

I've got the same charger mate, had it for 4 years with no problems.
It fully charges our jeep and Fiesta in about 1-2 hours but can take 5-6 for the Range rover.

Did it fix your battery or do you use it frequently mate?

I had my battery changed because it kept saying low.
I use the charger perhaps every 2 months to just top it up.
This is how I connect it to the car with a long lead to my garage and I can lock the car with the charger in the dry.

How does that connect in to the charger mate as mine just came with two large crocodile clips on the end. I've seen some where they come with rings you can connect direct to the battery. Cheers

I have had this issue in the past, 2 solutions that I use

1. Turn off interiors lights as mentioned.

2. Put a Noco booster in the boot !

We are at horse shows most weekends and doors/boot get left open for extended periods

As it happens I have never had to use the booster since I turned off the interior lights Rolling with laughter

This is on my 2011 4.4TDV8

I have the same two piece connector on the charger end that you can see under the bonnet.
I connected the wire with a bolt through the crocodile clips.
Get the three pin connector plug because it will only connect one way so you know the polarity will always be correct.

One of the biggest irritations on my 2011 L322, actually got the dealer to look at it out of warranty via customer services. Never stopped doing it (and the L405 does it too, albeit less often).
