Thought I'd share recent experience.
My RR came with one key - an aftermarket unit.
The RR would have trouble every now and then with the key not turning in ignition.
Then escalated to the steering wheel lock not releasing after finally starting. I'd pull off and wheel locked!
Locking and unlocking doors was not a problem.
Last straw was being stuck at an airfield in Pretoria in high temperatures with a meeting to get to.
I tried all the DIY tips on the webs:
- short wire from steering column to cabin footwell light.
- spray WD40 everywhere
- bang stuff with a mallet
- burn incense
- bought an override unit from Turkey (meant to plug into the harness and solve all the issues).
Problem persisted. I then figured it may be the battery in the key, so as I split the key fob (in my front garden) I managed to lose the transponder somewhere in the flower beds. It's similar in size to your small finger nail. Vehicle now stuck in my driveway.
Phoned the locksmith. He needed the ignition ECU located inside the centre console. White case the size of a cigarette box.
Found this thread very helpful, but note there are two more screws to deal with towards the end.
Locksmith managed to programme a new transponder.
RR started first time and every time since. It's been two weeks now.
My thinking is the transponder is the problem - perhaps dodgy replacement by previous owner, age related...?
I've since had another key cloned and no further issues with either key.
Hopefully this helps someone.
