….and the 4.4 TDV8 is the only one with the excellent 8 speed gearbox….

4.4TDV8 with the 8 speed box is surprisingly good on fuel (high 30’s low 40’s on a good run) especially as it’s like a hippo without a diet sheet! 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

I have the 4.4 TDV8 and it does everything I want it to do very well. It's no slouch when I want it to go, but boy, would I love to have the 5.0 supercharged, just to say I had one before the demise of the ICE. |

There is also the 5.0 petrol without Supercharger available in some markets… not the UK though. Not seen that much about them on here. I know the US got them, in place of the diesel….

The 4.4 TDV8 is without doubt the best all-round engine and gearbox configuration. Top spec 4.4 TDV8s have 'double glazing' which makes a big difference. The active body control also makes a noticeable difference. The 8 speed box is fantastic.

"Best" is subjective. It depends on what your priority is. For my money I think the sweet spot is the Jaguar 4.4. No VANOS woes of the BMW, no performance aspirations of the supercharged, no complications of the diesels, just reliable waftyness. Encourage alternative fuels, use all the petrol!

"Best all-round" which would take into account performance, economy, reliability, refinement, upkeep, speed etc etc.

I'm promise I'm not trying to nit pick garry .Its just that I've got the "best all rounder" tdv8 with 8 speed and actually wish I went a different route. I think if I had my time again I would get myself a Jaguar engined 4.4. Encourage alternative fuels, use all the petrol!

Yeah, replaced the engine you already have. Only made it for a year or so if I remember right, so pretty rare relatively.

The first thing I would ask is, 'better for what?' which will narrow down the field. I note you ask about engines but you do need to consider the whole package. For me, the 'sweet spot' is a 3.6TDV8 in Vogue SE level.
