Paint filling engraving - sill plates / plaques

Not for the RR:

Brushed stainless steel sill plates / carpet plaques. Plaques were lightly scratched and the engraved / painted black vehicle brand lettering had come out over time.

I’ve lightly sanded the plates with 400 grit sand paper using a wet sanding method. The scratches on the plaques are gone but has anyone got any tips or can recommend someone who can infill the engraving with fresh black paint. I’ve tried and the paint keeps coming out when I try to remove the hardened new excess paint. The engraving is very shallow!

Thanks.

I’ve done similar in the past by simply painting in the black areas including a bit of over painting the surrounds and then using a fine emery paper wrapped around a piece of flat smooth timber. Emery paper as normal, end to end, the overpainted paint will disappear leaving the black lettering untouched, hopefully.

Thanks NDF. I did similar technique using 400 grit but it came out of the lettering. I might try 6000 grit before the paint has fully cured this time but I don’t want the metal plaques to go shiny shiny as they’re a brushed stainless steel and the 400 grit seems to keep them at the brushed look, if that makes sense.

Sounds as though it is going to be difficult to achieve a good result if the area for the paint has a very shallow indent. I wonder if the letters were printed in the first instance.

Are you brush painting or using a spray can? I would have thought a spray can would leave a thinner film of paint and be less likely to pull out. Might be worth putting some etch primer on first? Thumbs Up

Thanks Kevin.. used Halfords satin black spray can a couple of times at first… that didn’t work… then used a Halfords satin black touch up stick… that didn’t work. Now trying paint on Hammerite satin black which, so far, hasn’t worked… think someone probably could get a result with this but the way it’s going, don’t think it will be me! Engravers and paint shops I’ve enquired with don’t want to know so far… engravers want to make me new plates but it seems ridiculous to bin the existing ones, just because some lettering can’t be infilled Thumbs Up

Go the whole hog mate and put some gold leaf on it. Mr. Green How about repeated application of a permanent marker pen?

An enamel paint might be a better bet then Hammerite. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

All sorted now thanks. Took the plaques to a proper engraver. Try as they might, the original engraving was so shallow, they couldn’t get infill paint to take. So, I asked them to remove any remnants of original infill paint, then diamond cut the etching/ polish the plaques. They look great, better than they did with the original infill paint Thumbs Up
