Is jacking on the tow bar safe?

I want to remove both rear wheels for servicing and I see the very substantial Westfalia tow bar has a big square pad conveniently positioned for a trolly jack to lift on.

My concern is not so much the tow bar bending but the the chassis/ tow bar mounting.

Is it safe to jack on the this tow bar?

Many thanks,

Kevin

I've jacked up the complete rear of mine using the towbar with no issues.... Cool

I'm with dingg1, used it several times to jack the back up and it doesn't deflect 1mm.... Thumbs Up Pete

Recommended nose weight has little to do with the inherent strength of the tow bar itself.

I've lifted both rear wheels well in the air using the tow bar without any issues. There's far more metal there than there is at the rear jacking points! The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

Pretty sure the workshop manual says the crossbar of the tow bar or the chassis rail between the exhausts can be used. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

If you do use a trolley jack on that point be careful of the jacks arm swing, as it comes up the jacking pad moves backwards and the jack may fall off before the wheels are off the ground....

Make sure the jack can roll forward as you jack up and keep an eye on it...

IMHO for servicing you need to jack up each side independently and use an axle stand....

There is a lot of weight there and if it starts to go, it goes quick...!!! Pete

I'd only jack on a single point with a very large 'garage' jack - the ones you have to drag and are too heavy to lift and have a wide set of feet to cope with any lateral movement. As said 2 jacks either side is far safer. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
