iiD cheaper alternative

Hi, I,ve been looking around at alternatives for the iiD diagnostic tool due to possible excessive earache from SWIMBO and decided to go for the iCarSoft LRV3 tool which I got for £150 from their official distributor in France with free delivery on eBay. This new latest version comes with a whole host of upgrades and improvements and can handle the usual stuff like Service resets, plus TPMS, suspension resets, ABS bleeding, etc. so it’s very close to the iiD tool, but for a third of the price with lifetime upgrades for free.

I’m about to do a battery replacement tomorrow on our L405, so I’ll report back and see how it goes.
I got a cool smart battery tester from AliExpress which quickly diagnosed 39% remaining SOH for only £28 without the need to remove the battery from the car. I had suspected battery issues following sluggish tailgate operation, and the fact that my CTEK MXS5.0 was taking a long time to move from phase 4 to phase 6 on the display.

If everything works OK, I’ll post up a response with links soon………. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Update:

Replaced the main battery today and updated the BMS, very straightforward, didn’t even bother to look at the manual.

Then did a “Quick Check” diagnostic, it found a few historic DTC’s so I cleared those, again really straightforward.

I then ran a full scan, which took about 5-10 mins and everything said “PASS” Happy Days!

Seems like this is a real contender now they added the latest updates lacking in the V2 version.

The French distributor even gives you a freebie ruggedised data extension cable, and is £30 cheaper than the UK, it did take a week to arrive though.

£150 well spent IMHO. Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Sorry, forgot to say, this product is not VIN-restricted, so you can use it on any compatible JLR vehicle. Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Sounds interesting, I may be on the lookout for a replacement for my ageing Autologic as the touchscreen has been playing up of late - can you edit the CCF / customer options etc.?

@Phoenix,

This seems more of a "Service Tool" than a "Tinkering Tool", i.e. "Is my car OK?" rather than tweaking it.

You can check it's abilities on their website, certain JLR features in the bus are locked by JLR for obvious reasons, I don't know if the iiD tool or even Chinese hacked "P*thF*nder" software can unlock features "wired for but not paid for", for example. I am not an expert in diagnostic software by any means, today was only my first amateur experience.

The important observation to make here is cost vs benefits. Thumbs Up

Perhaps others more knowledgeable than me can comment? Bow down “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Ah, right - thanks for that, I have an Autel 'all makes' DTC reader and a TPMS tool, both do significantly more that their website suggests so I was wondering if this was the same sort of 'underselling' on their website, it does read as a diag-only tool.

It does seem good value if you don't have the urge to twiddle & tweak things!

I downloaded and updated the software on my new V3, but clueless if it added any extra features or functionality, as I’d not even used it before doing so Embarassed There don’t seem to be any Release Notes or ReadMe notes for updates, they just appear as available downloads…. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

UPDATE ON iCarSoft LRV3 TOOL:

Censored

Well, following a recent interim 6-month oil & filter change by yours truly, I must report this tool FAILED on multiple occasions to reset my MY2017 oil service, (as did the doors/bonnet/pedals/tug one’s forelock/say 3 hail Marys method) Maybe it works for earlier models, but not 2017.

Contacted the developer, and after an initial response asking for data log which I immediately provided, zero response to date.

I therefore can NOT recommend this tool other than as a simple DTC scanner, which I already had in the form of the most excellent little Vgate iCar Pro BT module, (under a tenner on AE).

Now saving up for an iiD BT tool Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

If anyone has had a better experience with this tool, please post here and I will edit this post accordingly, thanks guys! “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

After my IIDtool got stolen, I couldn't justify buying another so likewise, I bought the Autel AP200.

Bargain at £50.

Whilst I haven't used it in anger, I've used it for service resets, putting the air suspension into TTM, reading and clearing codes etc.

Might be a worthy consideration for you Gremlin?

I've taken the train of thought that if the Autel does everything I need it to on a day to day basis then it may suffice for the whole time I own the car. If I really, really need another IID I'll just buy one if the time comes (which it may never do). Kev
