just realised it was you that scrapped the car due to it...

what age and milage was the car when you bought it? Did you park it in the sea (lol)
Did you go back to the dealer to discuss options?

The main reason it was scrapped was gearbox failure which would have been ITRP £2.5k for a decent rebuild.

With a few other things like some faded paintwork, A/C condenser required & other bits to bring it back up to really nice it was nor worth it.

I saw the state of the underside & there is no way that sort of corrosion would have progressed in a year & certainly had it have been advanced at the time of the dealers MOT it should have been at least an advisory.

Dealer was not interested.

2012 Orkney in the foreground and 2009 Stornoway behind. Not at all easy to tell the difference unless they are together.

Really? You think the sills will be shot?

The rust on the arches looks very minor, the lips is just surface rust from what I can see.
The dealer send me a video walk around of the car and shows them, they look ok.

I’ll find out tomorrow, anyway.

FWIW; I discovered minor surface corrosion in exactly that position and around the area of the still cover on my 2012 after I bought it. The sill covers are easy to remove and I treated mine with Hammerite No.1 Rust Beater under the sill cover area. The sills themselves were solid. The car was then under sealed with Dintrinol at Southwest rust proofing in Westbury. I followed up on the visible part of the arch with smooth Hammerite black gloss spray.

All done, stopped any rust coming back and the resultant finish is good enough that it can’t be seen unless you are specifically looking for it. And of course it’s all covered when the rear doors are closed.

I also fitted continuous wheel arch lip strips; I used parts from a freelander 2; see the advice on YouTube below which also lists the Britpart part numbers.

I’ll be doing this! Thanks for that.

Right, I went up on Saturday and she was tidy, so I bought her.

Had a monstrous list of things to check and most of them were spot on.

As for rust, I managed to pull the plastic sill cover off and it’s mint underneath. Oil cooler replaced 18m ago. Gearbox not had a service, although not jerky, I will have that done sooner rather than later.

Only things I picked up where a tiny squeak from the fan belt when cold - it’s the top idler, has a little bit of movement up and down. The driver seat armrest didn’t stop - fixed that this morning. I took it apart and the grub screw it stops on had fallen out. Lastly the driver seat cools, but doesn’t heat. Dealer told me it works and it felt like it did when I checked, but it must have been placebo due to the warm weather as when I jumped in at 0700 this morn it didn’t work at all.

Otherwise I’m really happy with it!

Ohhh and it’s Orkney!

Thanks for the advise.

P.S. trying to upload photos, selecting them but nothing happens?

Sounds like a good 'un. Looks nice, especially without privacy glass IMO. (Dealer hasn't taken it off his site as sold yet so pics still up Smile ).

Yeah I also like that it’s go no privacy glass.

I’ve been quoted £511 for a gear box service from a reputable, local LR specialist. Is that about right?

If they use the ZF fluid that sounds about right but you can get it done cheaper if they use non ZF fluid. Also most here will say get a 'Megaflush' and not a 'service'. Whatever you do also get the oil changed in the front and rear diff's and the transfer box BUT
Before you spend any money on it I'd get it thoroughly inspected by a LR specialist as they will look at everything esp the bits that usually give problems and if they find anything major you can get it back to the dealer to fix or get a refund - I assume you have read this?

Yeah, it is genuine ZF fluid. I don’t want it flushed, I’m in the camp of it potentially causing more problems.

As for inspection, I have thought about it but tbh, I’m not sure I want to. I think I’m just gonna run it and repair what comes my way. I am still undecided, though. I think if I knew about every little thing wrong I’d end up fixing them and it would almost be a false economy.

Having said all that, what are the inspections? An hour or two labour?

All inspections will come with a list of advisories as long as your arm but all you are doing is peace of mind that nothing big is lurking. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I have bubbling of paint on the rear tailgate, and a bit of rust, I thought it was poor, but most 2011 L322's have it Sad

love the video though
