4.2 L S/C can I run without supercharger?

Hi everyone,

I may be jumping the gun here but I've noticed a whine coming from the engine that varies with engine speed and the next day some stuttering too. At first I figured it's a good chance that it's the alternator or water pump. But once it started stuttering I'm now thinking it could be the supercharger.

I'll use my mechanics stethoscope to isolate the component this afternoon.

If it is the supercharger, can I remove it from the car to get it rebuilt and still drive it? I'm thinking I'll need a shorter belt and perhaps some blanking plate? Not sure exactly.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I'll post an update when I know more.

Thanks!

UPDATE:

Removed the engine cover and could clearly hear it's the alternator! Whooo Hooo! Still not too cheap but nothing like the cost of the supercharger!

Any opinions on replacement brands? LR is SUPER expensive. How about Delco or Denso?

Thanks again!

Denso are the original OEM manufacturer so, save yourself some cash, simply because it doesn't have a Land Rover stamp. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Hi Gary,

Thanks! I've been searching but they are out of stock everywhere here in the USA. A friend who owns a few auto dealerships (Honda and Mazda) said that Bosch would be acceptable but to not get a remanufactured model if possible. Go for a new one.

I'm still looking and hoping to avoid having to buy from the dealer.

Thanks!

Check Advanced Factors in the UK. They ship worldwide and their site shows the Denso in stock.

TransGlobal also sell lots of Range Rover parts (they have an ebay store) and they also have the Denso in stock and ship worldwide. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the pointer to Advanced Factors! I just bought a brand new (not remanufactured) Denso alternator. Although I currently have a remanufactured Bosch unit in there now (likely a Denso originally) I'll swap it out for the new Denso when it arrives.

What's odd is that out here the price for a remanufactured unit is about $200 - $300 (USD) but this one came to just a smidge over $300 USD with shipping (there may be some import tax when it arrives, though).

Thanks again,
