Hi,

Ive finally managed to get a complete second hand (front and rear) set of calipers for my 4.4TDV8.

I would like to have them rebuilt and powder coated.

Can anyone recommend a place that can do this for me ?

Ive found a few places on line but before I send them off thought i would ask here.

The place I'm aware of online are BCS Automotive however, iirc it's around £250-300 per caliper for a refurbishment of the front Brembos (and Maltings sell brand new reproductions for a smidge over £300 on next day delivery anyway).

Fronts

Local engineering firms would also be able to do the refurb for you - at the end of the day it's 6 pistons and seals, plus two bleed screws per caliper, plus a shot blast and powder coat. If you shop around, I imagine a workshop may do it for about £400 a pair. You'll need to ring round a few engineering firms because they're the kind of places that don't have websites and work old school.

Warning, do not attempt to remove the bleed valves yourself. They're notorious for welding themselves to the cast and require proper extraction / drilling in a workshop. Trying to remove yourself will most likely result in snapping them.

Rears

The rear calipers are super simple to refurb. The kit is about £15 and getting the single piston out only requires a basic air compressor (your typical Ring compressor for filling your tyres is more than powerful enough). These shouldn't cost more than £100-125 each to get refurbished. But, the original manufacturer are TRW and brand new OEM calipers can often be found on offer for £90-100 each (I bought 2x brand new TRW rears for £85 each)


So, my advice is even though you've got hold of a full 2nd hand set, I'd weigh up the options and costs before diving in! 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I saw the Maltings callipers but if I’m honest was worried that they wouldn’t be up to OEM standard.
It’s more the powder coating I’m after. But with a service included. 2011 4.4 TDV8

The rear calipers are notorious for seizing so, would be best they're new or have a full refurb. Like I say, the refurb kit isn't expensive so, is no big deal.

The Brembos aren't known so much for seized pistons but the bleed valves do weld themselves together, which is going to cause a big problem when they get fitted and the garage can't bleed the caliper so, a screw extraction, strip and powder coat would be the most likely minimum. Also, getting one bleed valve open isn't enough. These calipers are very difficult to bleed properly and need both valves open.

These guys refurbed the callipers for my RX8 and did a great job for about £250 (couple of years ago so prices may have changed) 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

They're very easy to do yourself.

You can buy refurb kits on eBay with new pistons and new seals and you can also buy high temperature brake caliper paint.

I've just done the 4 pots on my car and am more then happy with the results.

If you don't need the pistons and seals you can clean them gently with a wire brush, and I mean gently as you'll mark the calipers if you apply much pressure.

I then built up 3 coats of paint on mine and then applied the transfers.

Callipers are a great way to start doing you own DIY, if you find it's too much then just send them to one of the places refurbishing them...

This is for the fronts on the early L322, very similar to most callipers so the process is similar...

I've had to order the Maltings front 6 pot callipers as I have some seized pistons. I will then refurbish the old ones once off the car.

The Maltings ones seem to be copy castings of the Brembo ones without any branding but are certainly heavy and solid. If I have any issues I will update. New genuine front callipers seem to be around £1k per side which is nuts! Tom

Hi Flashman, interested in how you discovered you had some seized pistons.

The car I bought had been standing for a while during Covid and there was a serious vibration through the steering when braking. The front discs were seriously rusted and when I looked to change the front pads I found that only 2 of the 3 pistons was pressing against the pads causing serious vibration issues. To be safe I am just replacing with the Maltings ones so I can drive it, and will then look to referring the original Brembo ones to put back on the car in the future.

Like many have said, the rears can stick, and my rear drivers side did when I picked it up, but since driving it for a few miles it has released and does not rub at the moment. Touch wood! Tom
