United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Orkney Grey
CarPlay / Android Auto solution

Happened upon this video from Sam's Motor & Machine last night.
A new product apparently.
Covers the install followed by a brief demo in which I found it difficult to properly see the head unit display.
I note the inclusion of nylon "standoffs" for use in the fitting of new components inside the dash head unit. Potentially superior to Naviplus in this regard.

Sam promises a further video on Friday discussing the upgrade in use.

I did a little further digging, noting the packaging brand name during the course of the video.
Whilst UK dealers are thin on the ground, this would appear to be a UK supplied solution. 2011 L322 TDV8 A/b Orkney Grey

And one or two bikes - Ok, maybe more than one or two....

Well yes, not cheap.
I believe Sam did comment to that effect.

But from memory, I think price is comparable with Naviplus. 2011 L322 TDV8 A/b Orkney Grey

I notice yours is a dual view unit, does the same kit work with the single view screen ?? or do you specify at time of purchase ??

Mike,

The "Additional Information" section on the page at this link seems to imply both are supported.
But unable to say if the feature is switchable.

I wish I had come across this video a week or so ago - Purely for a handy guide on taking the whole dash apart!

That specific unit though, im always disapointed theyre not running Android, and that its only Android Auto/Carplay.

I like the option of installing apps direct on the unit and just connect to mobile hotspot.

We're perhaps unlikely ever to see an Android implementation of that sort.
By implication it encourages installation and therefore use of applications having potential to distract the driver.

Now of course I'm aware that legislation bars use of various devices such as phones and satnav by the driver whilst on the move anyway. But I suspect that a full mobile operating system implementation for use in cars might be deemed too much of a temptation and therefore just a step too far.

And thinking about it would most people actually make use of this level of functionality ?
I confess I'm doubtful. 2011 L322 TDV8 A/b Orkney Grey

The best thing about the Unique-Ad unit is all the original screens and menu's remain consistent.

Personally for me (so far), i havnt missed any of the normal screens since i installed my Android headunit.

Some apps work better directly on an android system, than they do on Android Auto. (EG, Spotify searching etc)
And some apps plain wouldnt be available (i think), in Android Auto/Carplay - EG; DAB Radio, live TV etc.

Yes fair point - I can see how the look and feel of specific apps might be superior depending on platform. 2011 L322 TDV8 A/b Orkney Grey

I would love to install one of these units and have been watching the various systems for a while but, until the price drops I cant justify paying that amount for Apple car play when my sat nav and my handsfree both work ok.

Especially with all the work that goes into installing the unit. 2012 TDV8 Autobiography Baltic Blue

I watched both the vids with interest. I’m quite interested in carrying this out. But I was surprised at sams disappointment with sound quality. His Chinese phone didn’t work 100% functionally, with the unit, but using a friends iPhone, it was better, functionally, but not superior in sound quality, to the far cheaper Bovee plug in device I’m currently using. I thank Sam for his opinion, as this might just keep me using the bovee, and built in 2012 maps nav for a while longer. Are there any other branded similar upgrade android CarPlay units?

There are one or two.
But as far as I'm aware, the only other product offering quite the same measure of integration is Naviplus. Others may correct me on this.

But Sam did point out that this is apparently an Android Auto issue rather than one unique to this product. With the adjustments as Sam describes and ongoing improvements from the vendor, it may be that this will be resolved eventually. 2011 L322 TDV8 A/b Orkney Grey

I've got one of these units -

I'm using a Poco F3 which is essentially a re-branded Xiaomi and once the master volume is adjusted correctly, the sound issue goes away. I also reported the track skipping issue around the same time as Sam, I'm glad he'd noticed it as well as I wasn't sure I was being taken seriously. They have since confirmed the software will be released in the not too distance future, which coincides with what Sam was told so that is good news!

I think the unit is worth the money, especially if the integration with the stock unit is important to you.

Cheers
