So I know a few people who have refurbished through turbo technics with good results….. I think a good refurb may be the most economical option with parts being so crazy at the moment.

65k miles is very low for a turbocharger fail unless it has been severely abused and had zero oil changes. Also worn turbo’s leak internally on the shaft seals and generally not externally so I’d be very tempted to get a 2nd opinion on this or if the leak is minor just live with it. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322) |

Not just a leaking gasket on the drain or the hose clamp not tight enough?

I'd second JayGee on this. Turbos leak oil through their seals internally and the oil (in small quantities) gets taken through the intake system and burned off through combustion (entirely normal on the 4.4 TDV8 due to the issue with the engine design). I can't see how a worn turbo is going to leak oil externally. Occasionally it can collect on the lowest point, which is the bottom of the bellowed hose near the front nearside wheel (need to take the radiator splash guard off). If oil is appearing externally, that's either the oil feed or return hose or a split turbo (unlikely) because you'd also be suffering power loss and all sorts. I think you should seek an opinion from one of the specialists who are regularly mentioned on the site. It's fairly common for the heads on the braided hoses to begin leaking - a quick tighten often resolves a leak. Without wishing to state the obvious, the most common cause of an oil leak on the 4.4 TDV8 is failed seals in or a warped oil cooler. The oil then makes it's way down the side of the block onto all sorts. Not sure how bad your leak is but mine has a receipt from a service before I bought it advising that a new turbo was needed due to an oil leak. It had 30odd tousand miles on it at the time. I've put nearly 100K miles on it and it still has the same leak.
