" Transfer box neutral" intermittent warnings

Guys

I have only recently bought my 2005 M62 engined RR. I am being plagued by intermittent bongs and the warnings
"Transfer box neutral" and "High Range". The car drives perfectly normally. The previous owner never used low range and I understand from research that the fault is probably a furred up variable resistor in the transfer box motor.
I do have a spare motor, but again from research, I understand that this problem can be cured by removing the motor and running it for some time off the car before refitting, to clean the resistor.

It would be helpful to know what people think-I'm new to 4x4 cars so all advice much appreciated.

Thanks

More likely to be a crack in the resistor or one of its connections, so running it off the car may not help. You might want to try resoldering the connections, if you have a spare in case it all goes wrong.
