Slight Judder under braking, more so from higher speeds

Dear All

Yesterday I made a 200 mile journey from East Sussex to Yorkshire in my 2007, L322 V8 Petrol Vogue. Towards the end of my journey, while coming off the motorway at around 70mph, i noticed that the car was juddering / shaking slightly while under braking (not particularly noticeable at slower speeds around 35mph or below).

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Many thanks in advance

A number of things to consider.

When did you last change your brake pads or discs and did you bed them in slowly enough? Slight warping of the dics may be the result. Can you check the run out on them?

Have you a sticky caliper causing the pads to bind on the disc- that may show up as a an increased temperature on one of the hubs. Take it for a run and check if any hub is hotter than the others.

If you recently changed the discs, were the mating faces to the hub free from lumby bits? Cheers
Richard

Thank you Richard and Craig Thumbs Up - I think I last changed the discs about 18k miles ago - How long should they last in normal conditions?

I would have bedded them in slowly, as most of my driving is around town and I'm always quite cautious reducing from motorway speeds, usually using gears to change down.

Interesting what you say about a sticky calliper, it's the first time I've noticed it, maybe because 90% of my driving is below 45mph - How do I check hub temperature, simply by touch?

Take the car for the highest speed run you can and then simply put your hand on the rear wheels and if one is considerably hotter than the other then bingo! Thats the problem calliper... Thumbs Up

I am getting a similar juddering feeling through the steering wheel when pulling up to traffic lights pretty sharpish on the brakes fairly hard, I don't notice it at higher speeds, only when I am slowing down to a halt

Have checked for stuck calipers and they seem ok to the touch - both the same temp either side to my touch anyway

I measured the tyre depth on all 4 wheels, and they are all pretty good, approx 5mm tread all round, I took it into Kwik Fit for the Hunter Four Wheel Alignment and all good, but still got the judders as I brake to stop fairly sharpish, any suggestions would be really welcome, as am getting a bit fed up of it !

Hunter Four-Wheel Alignment
At Kwik Fit, we are installing Hunter Hawkeye wheel alignment technology in a growing number of our centres - over 500 to date. The Hunter Hawkeye four-wheel aligner is renowned for its accuracy and uses a series of high-definition imaging sensors which measure 14 primary alignment angles on your vehicle. These include Camber, Caster, Thrust Line, Toe in and Toe out. The position and orientation of your car wheels are compared against the manufacturer data for your vehicle, ensuring the vehicle is set up perfectly for you to drive.

I've had the same problem, turned out to be a sticking caliper which caused the disc to heat up and warp. New discs, pads and calipers on the rear and its all good

Exact same problem for me. Gradually got worse until it was noticeable to everyone in the car when braking

Turned out my rear discs were absolutely knackered so replaced rear discs and pads and problem disappeared. My discs.clearly.looked like they weren't being evenly used if that makes sense, instead of a nice uniform silver finish there were darker and lighter areas so in my head I thought they might have been warped

Have a check of yours
