I have bought a 2002 RR Vogue V8.

The steering column is locked in the top/in position. The seat Memory does not work but all seat movements are fine
Using IcarSoft V3 I can see that all signals work, e.g when I press Memeory buttons I can see the correct button nr and when I use the steering wheel controls I can see that Up/down and in/out signals are there

My guess is that the BCU is faulty, but any comments welcome
Is there a setting that controls this?
When I try to connect to the CMM using iCarsoft I get a link error

Would resetting Ecu by disconnecting the battery be a sensible first approach?

By all means try a battery reset, you never know...

The up and down and in and out motors are renowned for early failure...

If it is just you that uses the fatty then you can remove the bottom steering column surround and turn the adjustment screws with a flat screwdriver, they have a slot in the end. At least this gets it where you want it...

Could be BECM, the drivers seat ECU, or a few other things doing it, but you need more investigation first... Pete

It's also worth taking the "pleatherette" flexible top shroud off the column and checking the electrical connectors to the motors
Because the motor drive end stops end fail, often owners then disconnect the electrical connectors to stop the "lazy entry" function -as its easier / cheaper than getting it turned of by someone with a diagnostics machine & solving the motor problems. It can also be just a cheap way of turning the lazy entry off.
Reconnecting them may not solve the problem(s), but you might know what works / what doesn't.

When I bought my car the steering was at the top position & disconnected. Surprisingly when re-connected everything worked fine. I think a previous owner just wanted to stop the lazy entry function.
Beware if reconnected & the key is in the ignition the motors will bring the steering wheel down to whatever setting it remembered last.

Thanks. Based on your help I have been able to manually adjust steering wheel position

All wiring is connected, and using my scan tool I can see that I get signals when I move the adjusting handle (in/our/up/down) and when I press the memory buttons. So appears not a wiring issue there.

I cannot scan the ECU for this, get link error. Where is it located, under passenger seat?

I am confused.
Workshop manual refers to RANGE ROVER VOGUE L322 FRONT SEAT MEMORY CONTROL MODULE ECU. Is this different to the Body control Module, and is this likely to be my ECU problem?
Is the seat ECU located under the driver seat?

Have you checked that you are getting voltage to the motors? you say the control signals are there but you need to put a voltmeter across the power terminals on the motor and see if there is any activity when the move command is issued.

I presume you have to checked as to whether or not the auto steering wheel function is still in operation and hasn’t been deleted by a previous owner. Deleted mine years ago, never missed it. Much better than the risk of the mechanism failing.

@Phoenix Measured across 2 terminals on the in/out motor, no voltage when signal applied
So my guess is still that it has to do with the seat ECU. My scan tool can connect to all ECU's except this one.
Not sure where the seat ECU is

@nicedayforit I cannot get to the seat ECU, so cannot check. But even if it was disabled, the seat memory should still work, and it does not

Found the seat ECU in the side switch unit. Interesting that it is a BMW part. Looking for a used one or getting mine repaired

I've just looked at the wiring diagram (below) it appears the motors have a ign. switched live supply via the seat relay & a ground together with a control wire, probably a LIN so expect to see a fluctuating voltage in the 7-10V range.
Odd that you can't communicate with the seat module
