'04 TD6 or V8?

Good day all,

Was thinking of getting an '04 FFRR, but need help deciding between the TD6 or V8 petrol. The car will be used off-road and on broken tarmac etc, which of the two are more reliable, and is the td6 as suggish as some people say?

Also, what should i look out for on models of that year - I know about the front diffs, anything else?

Yes, in most of East Africa. Even in the middle of the Serengeti! slightly cheaper than petrol too.

I dont think my TD6 is sluggish.

Only you can decide between performance and economy, costs not being an issue then the V8 is the way to go. 2004 black Vogue TD6

i had this dilema when i brought mine but when i worked out the extra cost of diesal over here and the mpg on both i decided the v8 was the way to go .....my brother has a td6 disco3 and thats not sluggish in my opinion so i should imagine that wont be an issue on the ff ...good luck with your choice "RANGEISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED"

The disco has a different engine, it's a tdv6, not the BMW td6 in the FFRR.
I believe the disco is faster.

The Td6 FFRR is fine until you try a TDV8, then you'll not want to go back. But it's not fast and is noisy under acceleration if the viscous fan is working to cool it.
Drive it like a relaxed, comfortable means of wafting from place to place and it's nice. It doesn't like racing about.

Yes the Disco/RRS has a different engine and is faster. The Td6's 0-62 is very slow - something like 14 seconds is it not?

I bought a 2002 TD6 six months ago and love it to bits. Wafting around it's fine and has enough power to do this. However if I could move the clocks back 6 months I'd get a V8 and LPG it (or even better, get one that's already converted). I was initially worried about running costs on a petrol but now I know the diesel ain't exactly frugal (24mpg driving like an OAP) I'd just get the petrol and be done with it. You pay less for the petrol anyway so that kinda offsets the lower MPG and get to have that little more poke if you want it.
One thing that seems to effect both cars is gearbox failure. Just check some recent posts for more detail. FFRR TD6 HSE

I wanted a diesel, but with the extra few grand to buy it, lack of speed and 25mpg tops vs cheaper, quick & 18mpg + LPG it was a no brainer

Don't confuse the TD6 and the TDV6, very different engines

PS i managed 24.3mpg out of my 4.4 today, 50 mile motorway/A-roads at 65mph

the td6 is more like 12sec 0-60 and mpg is 30 tops, and can be remapped. 2004 black Vogue TD6

4.4.. urban 12.7
extra urban 22.4
combined 17.4

3.0td6 urban 19.6
extra urban 30.1
combined 25.0

4.2sc urban 12.6
extra urban 23.1
combined 17.7

obviously this all depends how heavy/light your right foot is..

the run out facelift TD6 model was 11.6 0-60, can be mapped by JE to just under 10 seconds - mine was individually tweeked by them. The same engine in the X5 also got a significantish power upgrade from BMW around the same time. Mapping with this engine is not an issue as long as it is done by a reputable company.

I have the std acceleration figures somwhere for 0-110mph in 10 mph increments for both std and mapped TD6 and my TDV8 3.6 (if I can find them Whistle) private roads etc. Not, much difference between a chipped TD6 and a std TDV8 3.6 up to 60mph - about a second and a half, after that the TDV8 kills it - the 60 - 90 times are at least a 1/3 less. will try to dig the figures out...

Thanks for the replies. Been reading the gearbox threads and it appears the ZF in the V8 is a safer bet?

Can the '04 V8 take 17" wheels?

Yeah, but not by much. The ZF's have their issues.

I have a TD6, chipped and it's kept me quite happy. I can play with the BMW's and Mercs on the autobahn up to about 180KPH - after that the little 6 runs out of steam. Torque is phenomenal, tho. Brings tears of joy to your eyes - even when compared to the 4.4. I've had 3.6 TDV8s several times now for a weekend. The difference is not earth shattering. And for me, def not worth the expense.

I'd make my decision based on my budget. If money (petrol) is no problem, then go for the 4.4. If diesel is less expensive than petrol and you do have a budget somewhere, think about a diesel. If you're unhappy with the performance get it chipped.

They have tractors, trucks, and more trucks. I'd assume diesel is more easily available than petrol. I'd be surprised if there was anything resembling coverage with a network of LPG stations, tho.
