Bad starter TDV8 3.6 ??

Having driven around all day just fine, I tried to start the car to return home but it wouldnt crank.
I put the key on as normal, turned it to the start position....nothing, no click click click clicking, no dimming electrics. I tried to turn the key to start again but the key wouldnt turn all the way to the start position.

I took the key out , put it in again and this time the key turned all the way to the start position. same thing, no clicking,( which would suggest dead battery). and the key would not turn to the start position on second attempt like before, as if the starter had engaged but was stuck somehow.

The sun roof and windows all closed fine closed fine. no dimming lights which tells me the barttery must be ok. Didnt try jumping it as away from home without leads , but had been running around fine all day, no battery warning lights or any error messages.

Has the starter packed in wothout warning ?

Any help appreciated, Thanks

Hi, No point guessing with a fault like that could be all sorts...

Starter
Ignition switch
Immobilizer
CanBus error
Fuse
etc etc....

Needs some in depth diagnostics... Thumbs Up Pete

I tried to start with a booster pack but it doesn’t even attempt to power the starter motor.
Still the key turns all the way to start, no clicking. Second turn does not turn all the way to start position as if stuck.
Was hoping someone would have had the same symptoms. Battery has plenty of charge.
Call to the AA soon, not sure whether to get towed home or to local garage . If it’s the starter motor I reckon I can do that myself.

To be fair, it could be a host of things. But I think I’ve read before the ignition switch can play silly beggars on these and also the starter relay. Going from experience, my starter ‘clicked’ twice before she started, that was enough for me to get the starter changed. If you have no click, and the lights don’t dim when you try and start, to me, that’s not a starter motor issue…….but I could be wrong & probably am!😂😂 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Nothing in life, or fatty ownership, is certain.... Rolling Eyes

The key turning issue "could" relate to the immobiliser but it really is false economy guessing what it might be, even someone with the same issues could arrive there from a different failure..

The bit's to guess about are not cheap so it makes more sense to get some diagnostics done....

Starter motors usually fail where they either click or just draw current and dim the lights, but they can also fail where just nothing happens... Thumbs Up Pete

I’m thinking …..bad relay

Don’t think power getting to the starter motor, and like you guys are saying, bad starter would cause a click or dim the electrics. Don’t think that the current is getting to the starter.

Will call AA tomorrow and maybe tow it home and work it out from outside my house. Thanks, and fingers crossed 👍

Update …
I’ve tried to use an odb reader without success as the engine needs to be running.
I’ve tried a second key. Starter motor does not spin but this time because I have the doors open, I detect an audible single click with no dimming of lights.
Fuses all ok.

That would point towards the solenoid that controls the starter motor (the lump on the side of it)

Worth getting it checked out as it could also be a dirty connection somewhere between the battery and the starter, this could cause a high resistance in the connection and give the same click....

You can try the starter direct yourself with some jump leads... you tube will give you the fine points.... Thumbs Up Pete

Thanks Pete,
the click is coming from down under, where the starter motor lives .
Wishing I could reach it with a large stick or extension bar to give it a quick slap.
Going to replace with a new one. At least I know what a can bus
Is now, and it’s not something you smoke.
Let you guys know how it works out 👍
