The only people I've ever used for inspections before are the AA. It's not cheap though.

If you are unsure or not confident about checking it yourself then buy from a dealer and not a private sale and as David says you have consumer protection. Check the cars history on something like 'Carvertical' and check the MOT records with the DVLA to see what advisories it's had ( too many and it's not been cared for). There is no 'risk free' way of buying an old car but you can minimise the risk by doing the above.
