Learning to change oil and filters

Hi All
I am looking to do my own engine oil and filter change and basic maintenance on my L322. Youtube videos are great but I was wondering if someone could supervise me as I dont feel very confident in attempting them.
Look forward to your suggestions. I live in Gloucestershire .

Best wishes

Think we may need to know what engine you have first? I believe there’s different methods if you have a 3.6 tdv8 or a 4.4tdv8. If you look in the “Wiki” on here, I think there’s probably a section on how to do it.
I’m a lazy arse ‘cos I get someone else to do mine!🙈 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Thank you for replying Smile.
Its a 4.4 engine. I will need to get the right tools and I have no idea what to get. They mention about getting the torque/nm right when tightening the sump plug which is worrying me. If I attempt it and things dont go well, imagine having to contact a proper mechanic. That would be so embarrassing . I did try changing the kitchen tap once and had to call a plumber in the end.

If your not confident doing the sump plug method you could always use a pump to suck the oil out, the 4.4 is designed to do this and has a small tube left hand side of the engine (as you look at it) for you to attach the pump to.
There are lots of different types available, Sealey TP9312 Oil Transfer Pump 12V is on Amazon for circa £26.
That way all you have to change then is the oil filter which needs a 36 MM socket to undo it, then re-tighten to 25 Newton meters so may be worth you buying a cheap torque wrench. There’s lots in the wiki on oil and filter changes so a good money saver and easy to do using the pump method.
If you do go the sump plug way the biggest PITA is getting the under tray off, once done the plug itself is a 13MM but can be tight so make sure your spanner or socket is a really good fit, ideally use a six sided socket. Thumbs Up

Oh and make sure you have a large container, they hold 9.5 litres so make a big mess if you miss the bucket or it overflows.

Thanks Dave. Suction pump might be the way to do it. I need to now get a 36mm socket and wrench. Air, Pollen and fuel filters, are they straight forward to do?

You say 4.4 but is that petrol or diesel? 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Air and pollen are easy, you have two air filters on the TDV8, one either side, decent cross head screwdrivers to remove and clip the maf sensor plug off. Pollen filter slides in at the back of the engine bay, there are 4 tabs you push down and a flap lifts exposing the filter, the fuel filter although not difficult to change needs to be done correct, and once fitted the ignition cycled several times to bleed the system. Again there’s lots in the wiki on servicing. Also on YouTube if you type in raymies garage he does a fuel filter change all filmed.

Regarding sump plugs, you may actually have the clip on pipe type on your model, its in the same place as the sump plug and has a plastic type button on either side, press and slide off. It may also have a sump plug in the bottom to drain the turbo bowl, or get the last dregs out. Or the pump if you prefer.

Have a watch at this video for the 4.4 TDV8.

If you were closer to Glasgow I'd say bring it over and I'll give you a hand but it's a hell of a long way Smile

Thanks Dave. Watched them both , very helpful videos . They make it look really easy Smile but I am sure it's complicated than that.
Wish I was closer to Glasgow. Hoping to get a job in Arran next year, so you never know.

It's not. Follow Sam's video and the Wiki instructions on here plus the workshop manual is in there too. Get all the right kit, read up the documents and set aside plenty of time to do it slowly and methodically Wink Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

An oil change using suction on the 4.4 is the easiest and least messy of any car I’ve owned. I’d also do it more frequently (every 5-7k) than the recommended service schedule if you are keeping the car long term. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

The 4.4 TDV8 does not have a sump plug as such, so I suggest you are reading the maintenance procedure for the wrong engine. It has a drain hose you manually unclip for engine oil changes. The correct procedure is available in the Wiki.

You will also need a 36mm socket and torque wrench capable of going down to 30Nm, irrespective of whether you dump or suck the oil.

Air filters simply require a screwdriver with extension (i use a ratchet screwdriver to make life easier). Pollen filter needs no tools at all. Fuel filter needs a rubber strap wrench (it is possible by hand but the wrench makes life easy).

If dumping oil, you'll also need a container suitable of taking 9 litres of oil, plus rags/paper towels and brake cleaner/degreaser for cleaning up afterwards.

This is the schedule I follow:
Every 7,500 miles: Oil and oil filter (I get Petronas 5000 FJ from Opie Oils and a Mahle OX 153/7D2 filter)
Every 15,000 miles: above plus 2x air filters plus pollen filter, brake fluid test
Every 2 years: fuel filter change, coolant change, brake fluid change 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Thanks both.
I probably have been reading the wrong manual. Does the tray have to come off to access the drain hose/pipe?
