Thanks for the info. Good pics of how to do it on your other topic. As it's being seviced , I'll ask if they change the fuel filter as part of it (probably not I assume).

Mine looked like it had never been replaced, despite it being part of the service schedule.

If I were doing it again I'd advocate replacing the 2 jubilee clips for conventional slotted screwdriver type, rather than the Land Rover special tool version on the car. Makes it harder to tighten them up again. Stupid decision by LR if you ask me. Discovery 4 HSE

If they are not going to replace it, it really is a dead simple task, you only need a screwdriver, pair of pliers and torx bit.

With the filter being £10 only and 2 new jubilee clips being a few pence, why not do it anyway? I was quite surprised just how much filth was in the fuel. Discovery 4 HSE

I just put the new one in and let it sort itself, there is nothing in the workshop manual either about manually filling it up.

When you look at the official service sheets, I am amazed they don't replace the air filter on every service too, seems barmy to me. Discovery 4 HSE

Well, I finally know what the problem is - Gearbox is completely shot - only 3 weeks outside the extended warranty.

Dealer don't want to know despite them having misdiagnosed the problem throughout the last 12 months. They reckon that there are a lot of faults that could have caused the same symptoms so it's only happened in the last couple of weeks - !

Anyway, they want £3500 to replace the transmission. Lets just say that it's very unlikely that they'll get another penny of my money.

I have done a lot of digging and this fault is the Torque Converter breaking up over time and letting debris get into the oil, which in turn destroys the clutch(es).

So I'm posting this to act as a warning for others, and by way of a thankyou to some of you on this forum for good advice. If your car starts to judder when accelerating - especially at about 30 - 45 mph (even if just for a few seconds) and it is still under warranty, drive straight to the dealer, hand them the keys and tell them you don't want to see the car again until they fit a new gearbox and change the oil cooler (to ensure there is no trace of swarf left in the oil system)

This is the last straw for me. After 15 years of Land Rover ownership and a lifetime of loving them, its Good bye Range Rover . The most appallingly unreliable car I have ever owned.

PS. If you're tempted to service or buy your next Land Rover from a main dealer in the general Derby area, look further. Incompetence may well be part of the training there.

Don't they operate the goodwill gesture system like Renault do , in that , as it's just out of warranty, they put a percentage towards the cost? Could be worth checking with another dealer. I crashed the gearbox in my other car and ended up dealing directly with ZF Uk who had the parts shipped from the U.S. That gearbox would have been @£8,500 to replace at a main dealer (if they could get one) but the parts cost me around £2,400 shipped and I got a mechanical engineer to strip and rebuilt the box for a fraction of what a main dealer would have charged (not that they would be able to do that task anyway, they would just replace it). Steve

I've been told that if the car is under 6 years old you have some recourse via the Sale of Goods Act, whereby they should stump up most of the cash and you pay something towards it, even if its gone out of warranty.

I had a juddering issue, wouldn't get past 3,000rpm and struggled to reach 50mph, turns out it was the low pressure fuel pump. Replaced at a cost of £400 but its all fixed and I may be imagining things but the old girl seems a bit perkier. Discovery 4 HSE

Just picked up on this thread.

You know by means of this thread, you have proof with dates and times regarding your gearbox? It's all logged.

Personally speaking, I would persue this to get the gearbox fixed by the dealer/Landrover under your extended warranty - regardless of it being out of date now.

You have a case that proves incompetence by said dealer to diagnose the fault and fix it during the time you were covered under the warranty, and I would speak to your local CAB about it.

It is what I would do.

Speaking as a lawyer - I would too!

While I can understand your frustration, you need to do something. If you sell the car with a knackered tranny, you'll take a large hit. Even if you have a cheapo rebuild job done an unload the car you'll take a hit (not to mention potentially setting yourself up for claims by your buyer if the tranny dies again a very short time later).

Don't get mad, get even!
