BMW N63 V8 replaced for MY23?

BMW has stopped using the N63 V8 in its own cars, replacing it with the S68 mild hybrid V8.

It seems unlikely that BMW would continue to produce the N63 (as used in L460) just for third parties. Surely it would not be cost effective to produce two variants as the numbers produced are relatively low.

Add to this that the new RR Sport is going to need a V8 that gives 600 to 650hp to compete. It is unlikely that the N63 will be sufficient for this and I can't see LR using two different variants of the BMW V8.

We also know from the LR website that V8 orders are suspended.

Does this all point, therefore, to the N63 V8 in the L460 being limited to MY22 and for MY23 they will use the new BMW S68 in both the new Sport and L460?

LR are also going to want to use the mild hybrid tech of the S68 to lower their average emissions.

It would be very odd to change the engine in a newly released car after only one model year, but who knows, the whole L460 launch has been shambolic so far so nothing would surprise me! We may know more when the Sport details are released on 10th May.

It does seem crazy to change the engine in such a short time, but they did it with the new Defender and Discovery Sport. 2017 SDV8 Autobiography

Don’t forget that manufactures plan things around 5 years in advance and due to the pandemic their carefully laid plans went out the window. JLR could have planned to use the regular BMW V8 for a few years but the launch of the L460 got delayed and therefore the period of using the non-hybrid V8 got shortened. So perhaps the situation isn’t by design but just another result of the strange world we find ourselves in. Tom

Would not be surprised if they used it for few years and then stop offering (pure)v8 petrol.
It was different back then but look how long standard M57 and M62 were used on L322 while BMW upgraded and changed both engines about year after L322 launch on BMW cars.

I’d be a little cautious if I had a v8 on order. look at how they handled the defender release with 4pot engines then suddenly replacing with 6 cylinder at virtually same price. They pee’d a lot of customers off and didn’t seem to care. MY23 PHEV HSE

Strangely enough the SV P530 remains available to order but the lesser trim versions have been suspended !?

The sceptic in me thinks this has been designed to encourage more orders of the SV. I hear it’s been a bit of a flop and a power train enhancement over the other derivatives (a la L405) could do the trick!

I don't think even JLR are stupid enough to think that will work. If people are not ordering the SV it's because it's overpriced for what it is. Removing the V8 option from AB trim will just make people choose an alternative engine option or, worse for JLR, buy a car from another brand. It's not going to make buyers cough up 20% more for an SV. They need to give the SV 600hp+ and throw all the options in as standard, then they may get more interest.

N63 in the new RRS. I think we’ll see the S63 in the new fast / SVR RRS and then in the ‘hot’ L460, with a detuned S63 replacing the N63 at some point beyond MY24. I agree I think the delay to the programme and BMW dropping the N63 has caught JLR out - you can imagine the cost of asking BMW to continue to produce low numbers of a discontinued engine on contract - I suspect JLR will be rushing to get out of the N63 and into the S63. In time a L460 N63 will be a very rare thing…

LR website says P530 RRS currently unavailable to order due to high demand. High demand or lack of supply Laughing
