I know the jag engine version is seen as more reliable but in my market they are still 30k $ used vs 17k for the bmw version.

Is the bmw one so bad in comparison? Anyone had a good experience with the bmw version? I've had one before but the previous owners mechanic was useless and I spent the whole time chasing engine issues. The day it sold was the day I finally had everything sorted, except for an oil leak from the engine that I couldn't place and a heat soak problem caused by a facelift and aftermarket air filter.

Just wondering if that's typical or if I had an especially bad one. 2004 L322 V8

I reckon my 4.4 M62 BMW leaks more oil than any Rover-engined LR that I've owned (I've had eight! plus about the same number of other British leakers).

If you look at the high miler thread, you will see that the majority of those at the top are petrol V8s, and most are bmw. Yes the gaskets need looking after, but as most have lpg, it shows just how tough the bmw units are.

From early 2002 to late 2006 the only 2 engine options were the BMW TD6 and the BMW 4.4 petrol M62 V8.

There are only 2 diesels from this era in the list, versus 10 petrol engines.
Classic wisdom would be the opposite...

Surprised at the lack of TD6s.

I assume the lack of 4.4 JLRs have something to do with the introduction of the TDV8, I'd expect the NA petrol engine to last longer in general. 2004 L322 V8

I think that the Jag engine was only used from c.2005-2006 after ford bought LR from Bmw. In 2008, Ford sold to TATA. Hence the low numbers produced. The 3.6 diesel was a massive step up for the FFRR over the TD6 so was more popular.

If it helps mine sure is a Jag Engine, trouble free unit , very well looked after, this is my cruiser up and down to Scotland, as it has its oil and filters changed every 6K (at one point that was every 2 months) maybe excessive i know but .....

My td6 has done 150000 miles, there was one up for sale locally with 275000 miles supposedly running well. I see very few TD6`s for sale here in Oz, the ones that come up are generally more $ than high mileage TDV8`s. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Here in the Nordic the face lifted Jag versions are almost twice expensive than BMW engine so I am wondering if it is worth the premium? (€7K vs €15K) I understand the cabin quality is higher and the seats are nicer.

Found a 2004 with 99.4K miles which had quite a lot of work done to it during the last years and the itch is back. What do you guys think? What else can pop up and needing change? Or should I wait for a 06+ with Jag engine and decent maintenance etc.

Also the air pump for the air suspension must be replaced as well as the air bellows at the rear and brake discs at the rear should been done before the current owner.

The jlr engine is one the most reliable engines in a range rover. The BMW is one of the worst.
I'd place it worse than the crank breaking diesels which are at least reliable until the day they break. 2004 L322 V8
