P0646-08 AC Control Relay Malfunction Help!

Hey all,

My AC stopped working recently in a 2005 TD6 L322 (not sure when). I have the GAP tool and know that pressure isn’t necessarily an indicator of no leaks, but pulling 6bar according to the diagnostics, however the AC won’t kick in. The clutch isn’t engaging according to GAP

I’m a bit stuck because I can’t find the relay despite the error message no matter how hard I’m trying! Things I’ve checked so far:

All lights work on the HVAC unit.
All 6 fuses (10a, 7.5a, a couple of 50a, a 30a and a 15a) all seem to be fine in both front and rear fuse compartments.
Pressure is at 6bar in the system

Now I’m searching for this elusive ‘AC control relay malfunction - open circuit/short to ground’. Any advice greatly appreciated!

see the link below for L322 2002 - 2012 Fuses and relays.

One pointer is that all HVAC functions are controlled through a built in PCB inside the HVAC control panel. If you cannot find any other fault, it may be worth removing the panel to check for damage / overheating / corrosion from water / dampness.

If all wiring seems ok and you are still at a loss and the actual clutch seems ok, then you could try fitting another HVAC control panel / unit, quite cheap on ebay etc. hope this helps,

Thank you for this. I’m learning with the L322 that many relays aren’t able to be replaced separately (such as window winders held in BCM unit!) so I have been curious as to where this relay may sit.

I’ve had the dash out before so comfortable taking out the HVAC. I’m going for a ‘free AC check’ on Monday but otherwise will probably order a second hand HVAC unit to see if that sorts it. I was really hoping the IID tool would point me at exactly what was wrong…. I’m still hoping!
