Rear Diff - What’s this part?

The diff arrived back with the oil temperature sensor and one other part in a bag that was zip tied to the diff. They were both easy enough to refit. The oil sensor gets torqued to 22Nm.

The other one has a picture of a spanner with a cross through it on it so I can only assume it’s meant to be hand tightened.

I can’t work out what it is though. It’s not listed separately from the diff in the parts catalogue. It doesn’t really make much difference but I’m curious as to what it is/what it does.

Anybody any ideas?

May I suggest sending the photos to the diff supplier, and ask them, just in case it has been accidentally included, and not meant for your diff?

No clue as to what the part is, but, it must be a permanent fixture, due to the 'O' ring / seal showing on the centre photo. As for the no spanner / wrench symbol, anything hand tight will slacken / fall out / leak, may be the symbol means tighten to a set torque, to avoid over tightening / damage?

Now my OCD is telling me I NEED to know what the part is Big Cry

I rang the diff people this morning and spoke to one of the technical guys. Strangely, they always leave these parts off at the point of rebuild but nowhere in the manual does it state how they should be refitted!

The part on mine is unique to the locking differential.

Anyway, if you take the motor housing off the differential and rotate the diff by hand you can eventually see a fork come round.



If you then rotate the diff backwards by 90 degrees you can see the fork in the hole where this “thing” goes.



With it then screwed in it has aligned the teeth for the locking motor properly.



And rather then leaving the locking mechanism free to rotate with the diff, it’s now come spring loaded with that peg installed.



Again, massive thanks to D&A Steering for taking my call and getting one of the tech guys to call me back. More so, thanks to the tech guy for actually calling me back… that seems to be a rarity these days!

Now for another clean up and another bead of instant gasket around the motor!

I did wonder what the elongated section was for, thanks for posting the info, it has helped my OCD Whistle

Thanks for the explanation. The peg can be seen on Microcat but no indication of its purpose or alignment requirement.

That’s what confused me, Graeme.

I can see it illustrated in the workshop manual, I could also see it illustrated in the parts catalogue but there was no mention of it in either.

At least we’re sorted now! Hopefully get the car back together at the weekend now!
