Horrible sight

…….and it’s not the reflection in the mirror either!🤣
A nice run down to Kent from Suffolk yesterday for a christening, decided to take the FFRR for a good run, on cruise at 68mph on the M11 south expecting the mpg to rocket towards high 30’s if not touch 40mpg. Looked down & saw 27.8mpg this after about 50 miles of steady driving. Few minutes later, no bong, but saw ‘Restricted Performance’, couldn’t stop or more to the point, didn’t want to stop. Made it into Kent, stopped & restarted……all fine!
Totally off topic, small queue on the Dartford Crossing, some poor sod in an 05 Prius had come to a stop, half way up the ‘up ramp’ & right in the middle of all four lanes, poor Censored .
I digress, left Kent & sat on the M25 & M11 again 68mph on cruise, no problems all the way home. Gave her a large piece of size 11’s near to home up to 3000rpm to spool the second turbo & no problems.
Got the forum pages loaded up with a cuppa & first stop MAP sensor (great read up on what a MAP sensor does & issues when it doesn’t) MAP sensor works on a vacuum & works harder when there’s no stress or power being used i.e. M11 on cruise. I’d read issues a long while ago & thought my girl wasn’t affected……went outside & took the MAP sensor off…..covered in crud, eventually got all four holes cleaned. Looked down the plenum where the sensor goes…..oh lord, solid! Forgot to take a photo but it was solid. Poked around, got it all cleaned out but was concerned any bits that fell in the plenum might get sucked in. Throttle body off…….crikes……look at the mess! Long story short, all cleaned up & looking respectable, just need another long run to make sure she’s fine.
One assumes this is normal for a diesel?
The crud in the plastic container was out of the plenum😳😳😳

Normal for these cars. My MAP sensor needs cleaning at least every 5k miles but curiously my throttle plate was clean when I removed the intake pipe. If there is any air leak the engine will over fuel and create more soot and if you are getting low MPG and restricted performance I'd look for splits in either the plenum or the 4 rubber connectors. To do a proper clean most take off the whole plenum and I'll get round to it one day - just can't face the mess it will create..... 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Holy Censored …..I remember seeing that photo a while ago!
Think I’ll be cleaning the MAP sensor on a regular basis now.
Really wanted to remove the whole plenum but with the hose clips fitted opposite each other (why) I couldn’t get to the rear clips. With more time, I probably will. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Must say it's the messiest I have ever done, and wouldn't like to do it again. Ever.

Bought a used plenum to clean up, test and fit to save time with the swop over. It's actually not too badly contaminated and certainly nothing that would make a difference to airflow but you don't need much of this sludge to make it a nasty dirty job to clean up. Mine better be in a bad state to make this job worthwhile. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Is this a six banger issue? Not seen that level of crud inside my V8 intake when i took it apart... Christian.

TDV8 4.4. Some are worse than others which may be down to how it's been driven, serviced and if it's had an intake air leak. My throttle plate was pretty clean when I last looked but my MAP sensor clogs up very rapidly so not sure what I'll find when I take it off. Having gone through a clean up of the used one I bought yesterday it's not something I want to do again - ever! 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I can imagine it's pretty grim as it's oil vapour from PCV and EGR mixed together.

Engine idling is the worst thing for coking up, if you're a motorway mile muncher then you should be much cleaner inside the intakes. Christian.

Lots of short trips will create sludge in the crank blowby gases that adds to the mix. Also extended oil drains will mean the soot suspended in the oil will add further to the mess so a good argument for regular oil changes. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Does anybody know if this is a problem with the 3.6? I’d be keen to do this myself to keep everything ship shape!

Not aware of any issues like this on the 3.6 and many blank their EGR's anyway to prevent turbo and engine damage. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Is this a job I'm supposed to be doing as preventative maintenance on my 4.4 TDV8?

Is there a guide with photos anywhere? 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
