TDV8 4.4 Restricted Performance - P004B-71 Actuator Stuck

Hi Chaps,

So broke my cherry with first RP experience. Read the code, and seems logical enough, stuck Actuator on 2nd turbo - common enough ( arent all the fault common at this stage Laughing ).

Cleared fault and then booted it, came straight back as soon as second turbo tried to kick in. Cleared again and have done 90 miles today ( M4 - the joys ), but keeping RPM below 2000 and no issues - so 90% its got to be the Actuator.

My only other thoughts . . . Yesterday i was cleaning the front of the engine, trying to identify / sort an oil leak ( more than sure its the Oil Pump plug, but could i get to the buggar to get it loose and sort, nope, although Amazon deliver today should help with this, although will need to clean it all up again now ), so i had the intake hose at the front off, and then just moved the plastic housing that goes onto the throttle body out the way. When putting it all back in, the pipe on the right hand side of that housing, i foolishly "tucked" that pipe out of the way, more than likely compromising the air flow - i sorted that this morning before leaving, but wasnt confident enough to boot it - would this be the cause rather than the arm itself ? Does it require that air flow to be able to actually move the actuator ?

When i get a bit closer to home tonight, ill give it a boot and see, but its always in the back of your mind, ive been in there, and now something is broken. To be honest it could be all the gunk i cleaned from the front of the engine dripped onto the csov and that now just needs a clean, just need to work through it systematically i guess, and of course some moral support from the community Laughing

Thanks

The fault happened after you cleaned up the front and removed the pipes? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Yep, it certainly wasnt there before.

Other option is i didnt put the intake hose back onto the throttle body tight enough, but i guess as so far its 100% RP when it seems like second turbo would kick in, i kind of ruled that out

ok, so ive checked all the pipes, and i cant see any issues there, so im guessing the actuator is actually stuck.

Ive read through all the info i cant find, and it looks straight forward enough to just spray with penetrating oil and free it up. My question, i read i should be able to move it slightly, which specific part should i be able to move, and in what direction. It seems pretty solid at the moment ( to be expected as its stuck ), but im not 100% sure im trying to move the correct part, and then also in what direction it should move.

I definitely have the unmodified one ( ive got the nut, so i will try and loosen that part, and then spray there ?

My experience with turbo actuators on other cars is that the rod from the pressure capsule moves but it can be very stiff as depending on what 'cracking' pressure it's rated at it may have a very stiff spring. Normally you would test by removing the pressure feed and attaching an airline and pressure gauge and seeing at what pressure it opens and also checking for any air leaks. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

The actuating chamber is vacuum operated so the shaft moves into the chamber rather than away, as would be the case with a pressure chamber.

My Indy took mine off & cleaned it all up, so I’m assuming it’s not a difficult task to do as he didn’t charge me for it! 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

ok so ive been under the car today, and sprayed it to death, and oiled it - as far as i can tell it moves ok ( assuming im moving the correct bit that is )

Are there any electrical component down there does anyone know that might of come dislodged / loose, in need of a clean ??

The codes are still the same as they have been, and only refer to the actuator, nothing about boost pressure or anything of that nature.

P004C-77 Turbo/supercharger boost control solenoid B - circuit low - mechanical failure - command position not reachable

P004B-71 Turbo/supercharger boost control solenoid B - circuit range/performance - Mechanical failure - actuator is stuck

If the actuators are driven from the vacuum unit and not from turbo charger boost then the solenoid may not be where the actuator is. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

so . . . .

first you guys are all legends thanks for all the info. Here is an actual real life picture of what my eyes are seeing Laughing

It looks a little different to your Mike, but i can only assume the Solenoid is the electrical connector circles in Yellow ??

Then circled in Red this is the Actuator arm, which i have been able to move by hand back and forth.

You may be able to tell from the photo, but its had a pretty serious oil leak at the front ( dont get me started on Oil leaks ), so im wondering if get connector apart, spray with some contact cleaner, and see where that leaves me - the cable at this end dont look perished from what i can see
