As the title, I own a MY56 (07 build) 4.2l supercharged. Having issues with the rev range at the moment, when driving normally I put my foot flat to give it some boost, it’s hitting around 4000rpm then sort of holding for a few seconds then it seems to kick in again but jumps higher up the rev limiter.

Anyone experienced this before ? Haven’t been able to find much in way of info on this after searching all night yesterday !

That’s a strange fault.

So… driving the the brothers house this evening I had a bit of time to explore the fault and turns out the gearbox is slipping in 2nd gear. Runs fine in 1st and 3rd and only happens high in the rev range. The garage I bought the car off had the trans oil cooler/line replaced as this is apparently a common fault due to them rubbing together. I am hoping it’s just a simple case the garage has either not topped of the trans oil enough or used the wrong oil. Going to buy a couple of litres tomorrow and top it up. In the meantime I’ll try and book in for a mega flush and hope it does the trick !

Make sure you top it up with the engine running and the temperature around 40 degrees.

If you're only getting slippage in 2nd gear then it sounds like you've possibly got issues internally.

Change the thread title to Slipping Gearbox and RRPhil who is the gearbox guru might be able to offer you some pointers.

Thanks for the tip on oil temp, done plenty of research on it so should be OK.

Any other advice on the issue is welcome…..

The friction elements used for 2nd gear are the A clutch and the C brake.

The A clutch is also used in 1st, 3rd & 4th gears. The C brake is also used in 6th gear.



Is 6th gear behaving okay?

Haven’t tested 6th Gear Phil. After discovering it was a fault with the Trans I drove home like miss daisy and have left it since….

If I were to hazard a guess I was pretty sure it was slipping in 4th but I could be wrong.

This is all when car is under really brave load, if driving normally you wouldn’t even know there was a fault.

Was the 2nd gear error a gear monitoring fault (P0732) or a gear load fault (P0782)?

If you could nurse the transmission up into top gear to see if you also get a 6th gear fault, this would then indicate a C brake issue or, maybe if you’re lucky, just a EDS 3 solenoid failure.

Phil, it was a wrong gear ratio fault that came up on the IID

UPDATE:

Finally managed to set aside a few hours to try and top the Trans oil up. Managed to get nearly 2l in her and 90% of the symptoms have gone.

Looks like it was just a case of low trans oil.

What I did at the weekend is just a ‘band aid’ and in the coming week or two I will have it booked in for a full transmission service.

Fingers crossed this is the last of the slipping gears.
