SDV8 engine failure


So, before Christmas my engine died (4.4 SDV8) just stopped no warning then failed to turn over.
It is currently having the engine rebuilt, oil starvation to the Crank welded the bearings - see photos.
But the thing to see in photos is the amount of crud circulated back from the EGR. This was the cause of the oil starvation as the sump pickup and strainer were blocked.
The car has done 150k miles and has a full LR service history and some in between oil changes. So what can be done to prevent this? EGR blank?

That hasn't just been caused by EGR. I suspect that the sump breather or oil separator has been blocked.
Shining a bright torch into the oil filler neck of mine that has done 150K kms, all visible components are spotlessly clean apart from the light oil coating.

as above, unsure how oil contamination can happen from the EGR

Cooler gasket?
Is it crud or extreme coolant contamination

4.4TDV8 terminal failures are quite rare, especially with good history.
But do you know for sure it's history?

What year is the vehicle as a matter of interest?

What can be done to prevent you ask?

The importance of using the correct specified JLR oil is a must, not negotiable.
Use SAE 5W-30 meeting Jaguar Land Rover specification STJLR.03.5005, ACEA C1(spec with a DPF its a low sulphur ash producing, where STJLR.03.5003 is for vehicle without a DPF)

You have a full LR history, you would expect that would be the case, but what oil was used in between these services?

Black Sludge is often created when the wrong spec oil is used, and it starts to break down under pressure and temperature etc.
Changing the oil (using correct spec) more than once per year, is another way to reduce contamination, also cut open your oil filter after its changed, you may see showings of undesirables and can take further action accordingly.
Your new Clean synthetic oil has detergents added to it (amongst other things) and actually helps by removing small amounts of sludge (to the oil filter) thats why its important to always change the oil filter with every oil change.

Also fuel dilution to engine oil is an age old problem to all diesel engines, dribbling fuel injectors etc and DPF active regenerations dilute the viscosity of the oil, which brings the rotating metal parts closer together resulting in bearing failures.
Making it even more important with the modern engines regarding oil choice and regular changes

Agree with GraemeS pointers.

And interested how were the piston rings? were they stuck and gummed/carbon-ed up? any evidence of Exh blow by past rings/liners into sump?

Would have thought it would be cheaper to get a recondition engine etc have you checked the crankshaft journals? in spec? would expect you would need a new crank at least. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

I wonder how it compares to the several engines that have had the sump removed to change the oil level sensor ??
I hope they all checked the sump oil pick-up while they had it off.

I've only ever once seen that kind of mess inside an engine. It was a small BMW diesel with a full BMW history for most of its life. The problem was only spotted to a brake failure problem (vacuum pump failed due to crap in the oil).
BMW were adamant that the problem was due to cheap (not long life) oil being used for too long. The Techs involved claimed it happens fairly often as cheap oils can start to break down at very low mileages in some modern engines.

Problem was that the BMW history was only for most of it's life, the last 2 services had been done by small garages and the car had been run to nearly 15K miles between the services which apparently was long enough for the alleged cheap oil to break down.
It was convincing enough to make me change mine every 10K mikes and only use the manufacturer approved brands.

Thank you for the feedback guys.

All of the oil changes were done by LR dealers, so can discount poor quality oil, unless a dealer has been using cheaper products.... but doubtful

Reason my mind went to EGR as the cause was, the pipe from the EGR to the inlet manifold was blocked and in the V below the EGR is full of crud.

Piston and rings were good, no issues there, but in the rebuild it gets new pistons and a good honing.

Crankshaft was U/S, ground down until the damage was removed, but out of spec so being replaced with a new one

Although not the first owner, I don't want this to happen again, but if Its just bad luck, then so be it. I'll crack on and enjoy it ๐Ÿ˜€

The oil trap for the engine breather is mounted to the underside of the EGR cooler with the breather pipe appearing to be push fit through a rubber seal into the top of the oil trap. If the breather pipe, which feeds into the primary turbo inlet, became blocked then I would expect a big mess in the vicinity of the EGR cooler.

That looks like itโ€™s done 150k miles without an oil change. We have tractors, 360 excavators and plant with the equivalent hours of 250k / 300k miles and they still look like new under the rocker covers with absolutely no build up like that.
