The economics of changing up?

Was thinking about the Math of changing my MY 11 4.4 for an L405.

Budget for 405 would be about 50k

Assuming servicing costs on both are going to be the same / similar over the next 3 years
It comes down to maintenance costs v depreciation

My rough numbers said L405 would cost me about 10k more over next 3 years (assuming no major repair but losing half value in 3 years)
My MY11 is fairly sorted. Most of the common niggles having been recently sorted.

Q for me was whether the L405 was that much better a Range Rover to justify.....
Decision for me was no
L322 will stay with me for a while yet.

Maybe there’s a MY14 L405 out there where the math is closer, but if the decision at best is marginal, the Q is why?
Of course, if I had the finances to buy the latest model (or join the queue to buy one) .....

I would like to think the emergence of the L460 will do something to help correct the crazy market at the moment! The early L405's command a huge value which has allowed the late L322's to remain at close and even in excess of £20,000 for a 10+ year old machine.

They were dropping as would be expected but the current used car market seems to have been exceptionally generous to Range Rover values.

I estimate most machines on the market are at about 20% over where they would have been normally. That would bring the 50k machine down to 40k, and the value to change would be much smaller.

I'm in a similar boat although much further down the food chain and arguably anything with a petrol engine has been given an even greater uplift - a car I was desperate to buy during the earlier part of 2020 for less than £6k would now be £10k based on whats on the market! 2005 E60 M5

If you have a sorted L322 why spaff £50k?
If you have £50K to spaff why worry about the economics?
IMO on either it's a very silly time to buy or sell a car at the moment unless you absolutely have to as dealers seem to be paying minimum trade in values and charging maximum forecourt prices in order to make up for lost profits during lockdown and the chip shortage driven new car shortage. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Timely thread , I’ve started looking for a replacement, but as mentioned, prices have gone up substantially. I really want a final facelift post 2018 4.4, but they’ve gone up £15 k +. Absolute madness currently. Thankfully I have quite a few months but I’m not confident of a drop in prices any time soon.

Is the decision to change up really a matter of economics?? Dont mean to be flippant, just intrigued that this would be the "decider". I tend to keep my cars for ages, but I know most dont. Indeed most buy on finance and change when the finance agreement runs out - so every 2/3/4 years regardless of the economics of making the change - the economics might affect what the replacement is, but not the fact of a change.

For those closer to my model of: buy a car; run it for a while; decide its time to change...
The decision to change is most often prompted on simply wanting a change.
Clearly if there's an expensive issue to be sorted and/or an increasing fear of one, then the economics are pushing the decision. But many of us have a subjective habit or sweetspot for when we buy/sell - again typically every 2/3/4/5 years.

With the market being broken at the moment such certainties may well no longer apply... Mike - MPx

The trouble with Range Rovers is 50k doesn’t guarantee trouble free motoring lies ahead Shocked

My last FF, a 15MY Supercharged was by a fair distance the best car I’ve ever owned. And for 18 months it was a pleasurable experience. Then it started breaking down (un-drivable) on a regular basis. It busted 2 injectors in a week Big Cry
With no manufacturer guarantee in place and aftermarket warranties silly money on a FF of that age, I had to foot the bill on each occasion. My local Indy then informed me the other 6 would probably follow. He also thought my rear diff wasn’t sounding as quiet as it should Sad

It had only covered 42k miles, I lost all confidence in it and part exchanged into a RR Sport which I don’t particularly like.

I’m currently considering my options on nearly new so water tight warranty or a 10 year old L322. Still potentially lots of expensive repair bills but much easier to stomach when you haven’t put £50k into it in the 1st place.

This is of course subject to waiting until the current silliness around prices comes to an end.

I've had a 2011 VSE for about 6 years now, about a year ago I decided it was time to move on to a L405. First problem was finding one that ticked all of the boxes spec wise, it might sound fussy but all I wanted was the things I've got on my current car like adaptive cruise and cooled seats but it seems that was too much to expect.
When I finally did find the right one and went to see it I simply couldn't see that it was worth an extra £40K to me.
I've kept my L322 and used some of the money I was going to spend to buy a Bentley.

I moved to a L405 2.5 years ago now, it was a 29k uplift over the L322 and for that it was 8 years younger and has 70k less miles.

If the L405 is worth as much as the L322 in 8 years time thats £300 a month in depreciation which isn't bad at all!

Ongoing running costs have been fairly comparable to date Thumbs Up

That being said the L322 lost 9k in value over 5 years an absolute bargain compared to the L405!

Its always man maths for me with the Range Rover, I love them and still feel special when I climb into one. The sensible choice is a Skoda Octavia I have its cost me £200 a year to service, mot and maintain on average over 4 years Rolling with laughter Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

It’s an 07 continental flying spur with 40K miles and a full Bentley history for £20K.

Interesting read I just haven't sold a Range Rover yet bought my classic in 1984 then my p38 in 1997 my l322 in 2012 and only changed when something major went wrong then after a few months of them lying around in the back garden they were fixed one after the other and just never had the heart to sell them. Looking at the 405 now in case the supercharged goes pop but won't buy one till I have to. They all put a smile on every time I drive one of them.
But it is difficult to see what you get for 50k compared to the l322 imho

That's pretty much the logic that persuaded me so I kept mine, bought a very nice toy and still have a £20K cushion if I have any repair bills.
