Tonight i drove a mates X5. A standard 3.0 diesel, with 300+ KMs on it, generally a pretty unloved and very tired jeep, but it was noticeably much quicker, had much more pull, much more torque than my TD6. It felt like it would absolutely blow the doors off my RR. My question is, should there be this much of a difference between a TD6 and an X5? I understand the different HP from factory, but never realised the TD6 was so gutless until I drove this tonight. Im starting to wonder if my RR even has a turbo fitted

BMW said the TD6 was always meant to have the lower powered version of the M57 engine…. But then they would say that, as they had sold Land Rover by the time the L322 launched.

It’s not just the power, it’s torque too… and the X5 is lighter. The X5 also has the dreaded swirl flaps in the inlet manifold to boost power and torque. The RR doesn’t have them either.

I had my TD6 remapped by JE Engineering, I removed the EGR and fitted a K&N air filter element.

Much better after that. What it should have been from factory IMHO…

Did the remap also effect mpg?

To be fair, I didn’t really notice. Obviously if you are using the extra power more, compared to before, you’ll use more fuel, but I found the low/mid range torque was much better, so in normal driving, I used less throttle to get the same result… car was smoother too.

Think I kept it longer as a result….

The RR TD6 was under powered because the gearbox in under spec for the weight of the car
The more power you add the quicker you’ll chew up the poor box onto no6 Range Rover

Yes, in one of my Range Rover development books, BMW sent over an X5 with a boffin… to Eastnor Castle. They took said boffin round in, I imagine, a P38 or a Disco, and said “it needs to do that”. The guy didn’t bother getting the X5 off the trailer….

X5 has a much more road bias. I don’t dislike BMW stuff, you can see in my car history, but it’s so bland inside compared to the RR.

If you don't need any off road ability then an X5 is a reasonable choice. Mind you if you don't need any off road ability you may as well just buy a 5 series (estate if you need the space). 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I think it’s mostly down to weight, the X5 is, I think, has a shorter wheelbase and definitely much lighter than the TD6.
I had an 05 X5 for five years & couldn’t fault her, pulled extremely well & really easy to work on.
I went from the X5 to a 4.4TDV8 so cannot really compare.
I also had the X5 remapped for power & economy especially having a twin axle wobble tent!  2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Wasn't the L322 a BMW design project ?
IMO the L322 is a luxury 4x4 and the X5 is a Luxury SUV 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Yes, BMW reportedly spent £2 billion designing and developing it. Sold to Ford before launch.

Was known as the L30 in BMW circles.

BMW X5 is about 2170 kg, so more than half a ton lighter.

Always thought what if only…

fl p38 would have had m57 and m62 power.
fl l322 with m57n and 6speed zf. Would have been ultimate L322
l405 and n57x in it. Wow!
